1. You are ʿAbd al-Ghani; be content, then, with a patched cloak.

    Keep company with people in piety, not through flattery.

  2. And meet whoever encounters you with a cheerful face.

    Live with dignity, and never abase yourself before any creature.

  3. Seek your provision in the lands of the Beloved.

    Let neither care nor anguish remain within the heart.

  4. Attain realization, and rejoice in a draught from the Unseen.

    Set your course toward God and draw near to Him—truly near.

  5. Then journey through the lands, east and west.

    And put your trust in the Near One, the Answerer of prayers.

  6. Take up the knowledge of the Sufi and the knowledge of the jurist.

    And abandon pretension, for there is no good in it.

  7. And cleave to the innermost core of the noble, discerning one.

    Then may you attain what you hope for,

  8. By the hand of Grace, from a place close at hand.
