  1. صح قولي إن السماع دواءُ

    لجميع الأمراض فيه شفاءُ

    True are my words that listening is a cure

    For all diseases, in it there is healing

  2. لكن النفع عند أصحاب ذوق

    وطباع سليمة لا جفاء

    But benefit is for those of taste and temperament

    Of integrity, not harshness

  3. ينشط المرء من عقال إذا ما

    صرخ الناي حيث راق الغناء

    A man is energized by the wail of the flute

    Wherever singing is pleasing

  4. فاستمع يا نديم إن كنت مثلي

    مطلق الحال ليس فيه خفاء

    So listen my friend if you are like me

    Utterly free, no concealment in him

  5. وتنصت للدف والعود لما

    يتوالى عليهما الإطراء

    And hearken to the tambourine and lute when

    Praise is lavished upon them

  6. والذي يلتهي بذلك غر

    ليس يدري ما ذلك الإيحاء

    He who is distracted by that is deluded

    Not knowing what that intimation is

  7. هو سر يبدو من الغيب جهر

    لقلوب الرجال فيه انتشاء

    It is a secret that appears loudly from the unseen

    To the hearts of men wherein is animation

  8. يسكر العقل بالذي منه يبدو

    فتفيض العلوم والأنباء

    The mind is intoxicated by that from which appears

    Knowledge and news overflowing

  9. إن علم الإله يملأ قلباً

    فارغاً عنه زالت الأشياء

    Verily the knowledge of God fills an

    Empty heart of it, things have vanished

  10. وهو قلب للعارفين صحيح

    صقلته عنايةٌ واهتداء

    It is a heart for the gnostics made sound

    Burnished by providence and guidance

  11. ملأ الله منه كل البرايا

    والبرايا قد عمهن الفناء

    God filled it with all the wilds

    And the wilds, annihilation has encompassed them

  12. عدم كله وربي وجود

    هم له العرش فوقه الإستواء

    All is nonexistence, my Lord exists

    For Him is the Throne above the elevation

  13. يتجلّى بنا ونحن شهود

    باطلٌ نحن كلنا وانمحاء

    He reveals Himself to us and we are witnesses

    Futile are we, all, and obliteration

  14. لكن القدرة القديمة أبدت

    لانتفاء لنا وفيها البقاء

    But the eternal power manifested

    For our impermanence, and in it eternity

  15. منه لطف ورحمة شملتنا

    وعطاء ورأفة واعتناء

    From it grace and mercy enveloped us

    And bestowal, tenderness, and care

  16. دار كاس السماع منه علينا

    فيه للكشف والتجلي احتواء

    The cup of sama' from it came upon us

    In it unveiling and manifestation containment

  17. فإذا دندن الرباب أجابت

    نغمة الدف فاستقر العناء

    So when the rebab hummed, the tambourine

    Answered, and anxiety settled

  18. وصريخ النايات قد شاكلتها

    نقرات للطبل فيا الهناء

    And the wailing of the flutes resembled it

    Beats of the drum, oh the bliss!

  19. قم تأمل وزد بربك علماً

    ما له في علومهم أكفاء

    Arise, contemplate, and increase your knowledge of your Lord

    None can match Him in His knowledge

  20. كل علم مما سوى الله جهل

    فتنت في الورى به الجهلاء

    All knowledge other than of God is ignorance

    With it the ignorant were tempted in the world

  21. غير علم الإله ما هو علم

    إنما الظن ذاك والإدعاء

    Other than the knowledge of God there is no knowledge

    Rather that is presumption and pretense

  22. ولهذا ترى التكبر فيمن

    علمه الكون وهو شيء هباء

    For this you see arrogance in him who

    Knows the universe and it is a worthless thing

  23. والذي يعرف الإله تراه

    دام فيه تواضعٌ وانحناء

    And he who knows God you see him

    Remaining in humility and deference

  24. حاصل الأمر كله ليس غير ال

    علم بالله أهله العلماء

    The crux of the matter, nothing but

    Knowledge of God, its people are the learned

  25. هكذا جاءنا الكتاب وجاءت

    سنة المصطفى وتم الوفاء

    Thus the Book came to us and came

    The Sunna of the Prophet and fulfillment
