لقد أوقعت دعوى المحبة في البلا

على حكم ما يرضى الهوى ويروم

The case of love has cast me into confusion,

Subject to the whims of passion and its schemes.

يجاذب روحي أمره فهي روحه

وتجذبها نفسي له فتقوم

My soul is torn - it is his soul,

While my being draws it to him, arising.

فيا نفسي الأمارة اتئدي هنا

إلى كم نزاع في الحياة يدوم

Oh my blaming soul, cease here -

How long will this conflict in life endure?

وآخره موت المحب فإن يمت

فذلك محبوب لديه علوم

For the lover's end is death. If he dies,

That is a learned beloved in his eyes.

تلوح نجوم الأفق في مائنا فإن

فنى الماء يخفى والنجوم نجوم

The stars of the horizon gleam in our water, but

If the water goes, the stars are hidden, still stars.

وليس هما شيئين يا نفس فافهمي

كلامي فكم حارت بذاك فهوم

They're not two things, my soul, understand

My words - how many minds were confused by this!

وضلت بدعواها التي هي ماؤهما

كما نحن قلنا والغبيُّ ملوم

And lost, in their claim that they are their water,

As we have said - the foolish stand accused.
