إن كنت لم ترض عن النفسِ

فأنت من نوعي ومن جنسي

If you are not pleased with yourself,

Then you are of my kind and race.

فإن نفسي لا ترى نفسها

إلا على خبث وفي رجس

For my soul does not see itself

Except in wickedness and vileness.

صفاتها مذمومة كلها

وهي من الطاعات بالعكس

All its attributes are blameworthy,

And it is the opposite of obedience.

من أجل هذا هي في الجهل لم

تبرح وفي غي وفي لبس

That is why it remains in ignorance,

Never leaving confusion and doubt.

لكن لها روح مطهرة

تصبح في خير كما تمسي

But it has a pure spirit

That becomes good morning and evening

من أمر ربي كلها طاعة

لأمره بالعقل والحس

By the command of my Lord, wholly obedient

To His command, through reason and sense.

شريفة تنبئ أوصافها

عن حسن أصل طيب الغرس

Noble are its attributes that bespeak

The goodness of pure, wholesome origin.

فالروح في الرفعة والنفس في

سفالة تبقى إلى الرمس

So the spirit is lofty while the soul remains

In baseness until the day it perishes.

كاللب والقشر أو الشمس مع

شعاعها فانظر إلى الشمس

Like the husk and the core, or the sun and

Its rays, so look to the sun!

والعبد منسوب لذا أو لذا

في نشأة الإطلاق والحبس

And the servant is attributed now to this, now to that

In the absolute rise and fall.

فتارة تغلب ذات العلى

فينعم المغلوب بالإنس

At times the highest self prevails

And the defeated rejoices in intimacy.

ويظهر المخفي عنها بها

لها فيبدو العرش والكرسي

What was hidden appears through it,

So the Throne and Chair are manifested.

وتارة تغلب تلك التي

بجهلها في الوهم والهجس

And at times the one prevails

That in its ignorance sinks into illusion and fancy,

فيصبح المغلوب في وحشة

من أمره وهو بها مكسي

So the defeated wakes in desolation

From its affairs, though clad by them.

طوراً وطوراً وهو دأب الذي

كماله الناشي على الأس

Now one state, now the other, such is the way

Of Him whose perfection is endless.

وراثة علمية حققت

عمن لحرف الكون كالطرس

An inherited knowledge that accomplished

Transcendence of the universe's letters.
