1. لبسنتني مليحة الغيب مِرطا

    وبها قد تعلق القلب قرطا

    The unseen has clothed me in fine garb,

    And my heart is attached to it like an earring.

  2. ذات وجه يلوح من خلف ستر ال

    شيء فهو المكشوف وهو المغطّى

    A face shining from behind the veil of nothingness,

    It is the revealed and the veiled.

  3. حسنه أدهش العقول فحارت

    أخذ الكل بالظهور وأعطى

    Its beauty has astonished minds, so they were confused,

    It took all with its appearance and gave.

  4. يتجلى وتارة يتحلى

    فنرى في الوجود قبضاً وبسطا

    It appears at times and at others it is adorned,

    So we see in existence, clenching and expansion.

  5. نظم العالمين عقدَ لآل

    أمره لا يزال للعقد سمطا

    It composed the creation of the two worlds,

    Its command always holding the necklace together.

  6. من رآه أصاب فيما رآه

    والذي قد رأى السوى فيه أخطا

    Whoever saw it, found in what he saw,

    And whoever saw crookedness in it, erred.

  7. هو شمس وما سواه ظلال

    وهو بدر لظلمة الغير غطى

    It is a sun, and anything else is shadows,

    It is a full moon covering the darkness of others.

  8. أحكم الأمر فهو بالحكم باد

    في جميع الشئون حَلاً وربطا

    It perfected the matter, so it is wise in judgment,

    In all affairs, a solution and consolidation.

  9. يا قريب اللقا بعيد التجافي

    لِمْ توافي رهطاً وتهجر رهطا

    O close in meeting, distant in avoidance!

    Why do you keep company with some and abandon others?

  10. نحن هدنا إليك ممن سواك ال

    آن فاجعل لنا من الأمر قسطا

    We were guided to you, beyond others,

    Now make for us a share of the matter.

  11. وتدارك نواظراً وقلوباً

    أعجمتها الأوهام شكلاً ونقطا

    And attend to gazes and hearts

    Muddled by illusions, form and dot.

  12. إنما أنت أنت والحكم شيء

    منك وهو الجميع عدَّاً وضبطا

    You are you, and judgment is something

    From you, and it is everything, counting and consolidation.

  13. دخل القلب دير عشق سُليمى

    يحتسي من لقائها الإسفنطا

    The heart entered the monastery of Suleima's love,

    To sip from meeting her, pure wine.

  14. فرأى ثم نسوةً طالعات

    من بحار الجمال يسكنَّ شطا

    It saw maidens then emerging

    From seas of beauty residing on a shore.

  15. ناظرات من الظبا بعيون

    ناعسات من البواتر أسطى

    Gazers from the gazelle with sleepy eyes

    Languid from staying up nights.

  16. في قدود كأنهن رماح

    جعلت قتل من بها هام شرطا

    In bodies like spears

    That kill whoever passionately loves them.

  17. كل هيفاء ينفخ الطيب منها

    كيف كانت تجول رفعاً وحطا

    Every doe whose scent blows perfume,

    However she walked with rise and fall.

  18. أمر الله أن تطاع بحسن

    راسم بالغرام في القلب خطا

    God's command to be obeyed in good manner,

    Drawing with love in the heart a line.

  19. بدر تمٍّ على قضيبٍ تثنّى

    في كثيبٍ بها عن المشي أبطا

    A full moon bent on a pliant branch,

    In a dune preventing her from walking.

  20. هي شمس الضحى وبدر الدياجي

    قد فنينا بها رضاء وسخطا

    She is the rising sun, and the moon of nightfall,

    With her we wasted compliance and discontent.

  21. ثغرها بث عن صحيح البخاري

    وأنا مسلم وقلبي موطَّا

    Her mouth circulated Sahih al-Bukhari,

    And I am a Muslim with my heart pledged.

  22. إن عبد الغنيْ لها الآن اسمٌ

    لقطته حواضنُ الكون لقطا

    Indeed, to her belongs the name Abdel Ghani now,

    As the cosmos gathered it randomly.

  23. فهي طيف الخيال في نور طه

    سيد الرسل كاشط السر كشطا

    She is the phantom of imagination in the light of Taha,

    Master of Messengers splitting mysteries.

  24. فعليه الصلاة منه وآل

    وصحاب ما الريح صافح خمطا

    So prayers be upon him, his family,

    And companions where the wind brushed a lock.

  25. أو تغنَّى على الأراك حمامٌ

    وسرى بارقُ الحمى يتمطَّى

    Or a pigeon sang atop the boughs

    And the fever's lightning slithered about.
