أُقاتِلُ حَتّى لا أَرى لي مُقاتِلاً

وَأَنجو إِذا لَم يَنجُ إِلّا المُكَيَّسُ

I fight until I see no more a fighter,

And I survive when only the shrewd survives,

وَلَستُ بِذي كُهرورَةٍ غَيرَ أَنَّني

إِذا طَلَعَت أولى المُغيرَةِ أَعبِسُ

And I'm not hot-tempered, though when

The first raiders appear, I frown,

وَيَقذِفُ حَولي جَمعُ أَخزَمَ بِالحَصى

وَجَمعُ سَلامانِ الحُماةُ وَسَنبَسُ

And the tribe of Akhzam hurls rocks around me

And the tribe of Salaman, the protectors, and Sanbas,

وَيَقذِفُ شَماسُ بنُ عَمرُو وَرَهطُهُ

وَيا رُبَّ مِنهُم دارِعٌ وَهوَ أَشرَسُ

And Shammas ibn Amr and his gang hurl them too,

And Lord, among them a repeller and he is the fiercest,

سَريعٌ إِلى الهَيجاءِ شاكِ سِلاحه

فَما أَن يَكادُ قَرنُهُ يَتَنَفَّسُ

Swift into the fray, testing his weapons

So that his spear scarcely takes a breath
