  1. وَأَبلَقَ مِن شَرطِ الكميِّ لزينةٍ

    وَإِحراز ميدانٍ وَيَومِ قِتالِ

    More excellent than the black streak of kohl for decoration,

    And for winning the battleground and day of fighting,

  2. فَخضرته ثلثٌ وَثلثاه شهبة

    فَأخضر قدّامٍ وَأشهب تالِ

    Is its greenness a third, and two-thirds grayness.

    So it's green in front and gray behind.

  3. لَهُ لببٌ مِن شُهبَةٍ بَينَ دُهمَةٍ

    كَعام صُدودٍ بَعدَ يَومِ وِصَالِ

    It has a flash of grayness between darkness,

    Like a year of rainy seasons after a day of union.

  4. تَدَرَّع بَدرَ التِّمِّ نُوراً وَظُلمَةً

    وَلُبِّبَ مِن حَيزومِهِ بِهلالِ

    It is armored with the full moon, light and darkness,

    And is clad at its nose with a crescent moon.
