أَلا اشرَبها عَلى النَّاقُوسِ صرفاً
فَذاكَ مُؤَذِّنُ الدينِ القَديمِ
Drink it down in one gulp, like a church bell
ringing out the old faith loud and clear.
وَصرتُ إِلى الخَلاء فَأَدرَكَتني
بِهِ الأَكواسُ في عَدد النُّجومِ
I wandered off alone, till cups came clinking
after me, countless as stars in the sky,
كَأَنَّ الكوسَ إِذ حُثَّت بِإِثري
كَواكبُ إِثرَ شَيطانٍ رَجيمِ
As if the bell that stirred to follow me
rang out the steps of some accursed fiend.
