1. وَركبٍ إِذا قَطعوا نَفنَفاً

    رَمى بِهمُ البُعدُ في نفنفِ

    When riders cross a sandy tract

    Distance casts them in sandy waves

  2. كَأَنَّ الفَيافي في طُولِها

    لَيالٍ عَلى عاشِقٍ قَد جُفي

    As if the sand dunes in their length

    Are nights upon a languished lover

  3. قَطَعنا عَلى مضمرات تَجودُ

    كلالاً بِأَدمُعِها الوُكَّفِ

    We crossed meadows of bounty

    Weeping copiously with tearful eyes

  4. وَتَحتيَ حرفٌ لِفرط النحول

    تَنفي النحولَ عَن المدنفِ

    And letters beneath me so slender

    That leanness cannot hide the lean

  5. كَأَني إِذا ما شَدَدتُ الحزامَ

    أَشُدُّ نِطاقاً عَلى أَهيَفِ

    As if when I tighten my belt

    I tighten a belt on one emaciated
