1. يا بَدرُ وَالأَمثالُ يَضرِبُها

    لِذي اللُبِّ الحَكيمُ

    O full moon, the wise at heart

    Strike similes about you

  2. دُم لِلخَليلِ بِوُدِّهِ

    ما خَيرُ وُدِّ لا يَدومُ

    Blood flows for the beloved

    Of no use is love that won’t last

  3. وَاِعرِف لِجارِكَ حَقَّهُ

    وَالحَقُّ يَعرِفُهُ الكَريمُ

    And know your neighbor’s rights

    The generous know them

  4. وَاِعلَم بِأَنَّ الضَيفَ يَو

    ماً سَوفَ يَحمَدُ أَو يَلومُ

    And know the guest one day

    Will praise or blame

  5. وَالناسُ مُبتَنَيانِ مَحْ

    مودُ البِنايَةِ أَو ذَميمُ

    And people are built

    By praised or damned deeds

  6. وَاِعلَم بُنَيَّ فَإِنَّهُ

    بِالعِلمِ يَنتَفِعُ العَليمُ

    And know, my son

    The learned benefit from knowledge

  7. إِنَّ الأُمورَ دَقيقَها

    مِمّا يَهيجُ لَهُ العَظيمُ

    Matters most delicate

    Stir the mighty

  8. وَالتَبلُ مِثلُ الدينِ تُق

    ضاهُ وَقَد يُلوى الغَريمُ

    Giving in is like religion

    Even the hostile may soften

  9. وَالبَغيُ يَصرَعُ أَهلَهُ

    وَالظُلمُ مَرتَعُهُ وَخَيمُ

    Tyranny fells its people

    Its home injustice and bleakness

  10. وَلَقَد يَكونُ لَكَ البَعي

    دُ أَخاً وَيَقطَعُكَ الحَميمُ

    Often strangers are brothers

    And intimates cut you off

  11. وَالمَرءُ يُكرَمُ لِلغِنى

    وَيُهانُ لِلعَدَمِ العَديمُ

    People are honored for wealth

    And disdained for lack, the destitute

  12. قَد يُقتِرُ الحَوِلُ التَقِيْ

    يُ وَيَكثُرُ الحَمِقُ الأَثيمُ

    The pious may know poverty

    And fools abundance of sin

  13. يُملي لِذاكَ وَيُبتَلى

    هذا فَأَيُّهُما المَضيمُ

    One is tested, the other spared

    Who suffers more?

  14. وَالمَرءُ يَبخَلُ في الحُقو

    قِ وَلِلكَلالَةِ ما يَسيمُ

    People withhold rights

    Yet freely give to baseness

  15. ما بُخلُ مَن هُوَ لِلمَنو

    نِ وَرَيبِها غَرَضٌ رَجيمُ

    No soul that hopes for paradise

    Can have intention so vile

  16. وَيَرى القُرونَ أَمامَهُ

    هَمَدوا كَما هَمَدَ الهَشيمُ

    And sees generations before him

    Lie as still as kindling

  17. وَتُخَرَّبُ الدُنيا فَلا

    بُؤسٌ يَدومٌ وَلا نَعيمُ

    The world falls to ruins

    No lasting bliss or misery

  18. كُلُّ اِمرىءٍ سَتَئيمُ مِن

    هُ العِرسُ أَو مِنها يَئيمُ

    Every man disgusted

    By marriage or averse

  19. ما عِلمُ ذي وَلَدٍ أَيُث

    كَلُهُ اَمِ الوَلَدُ اليَتيمُ

    What child knows which

    Raised him, he or the orphan?

  20. وَالحَربُ صاحِبُها الصَلي

    بُ عَلى تَلاتِلِها العَزومُ

    War's companion is one long gripped

    By its talons' imposing shade

  21. مَن لا يَمَلُّ ضِراسَها

    وَلَدى الحَقيقَةِ لا يَخيمُ

    One who won't tire of its bite

    And never flees the fray

  22. وَاِعلَم بِأَنَّ الحَربَ لا

    يَسطيعُها المَرِحُ السَؤومُ

    And know war cannot be waged

    By the feckless rogue

  23. وَالخَيلُ أَجوَدُها المُنا

    هِبُ عِندَ كَبِّتِها الأَزومُ

    The finest horses in the fray

    Are gifts at the helm of the bold
