بِأَكنافِ الحِجازِ هَوىً دَفينٌ
يُؤَرِّقُني إِذا هَدَتِ العُيونُ
In the reaches of the Hijaz lies a buried love;
it keeps me awake when all eyes fall still.
فَأَبكي حينَ يَهدَأَ كُلُّ خَلقٍ
بُكاءً بَينَ زَفرَتِهِ أَنينُ
So I weep when every creature grows quiet—
a weeping with a moan between its sighs.
وَما جارانِ مُؤتَلِفانِ إِلّا
سَيَفرِقُ بَينَ جَمعِهِما المَنونُ
Never are two neighbors joined in harmony but
Death will sunder their union.
