حان أن تسترد ذاك الشبابا

لا تظنن نجم سعدك غابا

It is time to regain that youth

Do not think your lucky star has set

فتجدد يا نسر وانزل بصدر الم

جد قلباً فقلبه قد ذابا

So renew, oh eagle, and descend with determination

Find a heart, for its heart has melted

أخطأ الدهر في صباك ولكن

قبس الشيب قد هداه الصوابا

Time wronged your youth but

The glimmer of gray hair has guided it right

فاغتفر للزمان ذنباً جناه

فاليك الزمان عنه تابا

So forgive the era for a sin it committed

For the era has repented to you

وتقلد عصاك ترعى خرافاً

طالما أجمعت عليك انتخابا

And take your staff to shepherd sheep

For long you have been unanimously chosen

لادماتٍ صدورها هاتفاتٍ

ربنا ربنا الجوابا الجوابا

No bloodied chests crying out

"Our Lord, Our Lord, the answer, the answer"

ان ذاك الدعاءَ طال ولكن

رحم اللَه شعبه فاستجابا

That prayer went on for so long but

God had mercy on His people and responded

فاستتب الأمر الذي كان قبلاً

يمنع الدهر دونه استتبابا

So the matter that was prevented before

By time from being settled is now settled

ورياح الانصاف هبت قليلاً

فازالت عن العيون الضبابا

And the winds of fairness blew a little

Removing the fog from the eyes

وجلت في العلى هماماً اليه

قد قضت في اشتياقها احقابا

In the heights it cleared away the worries

That in yearning for it spent eras

ارجع الرب في سماء المعالي

شمس فضلٍ كادت تداني الغيابا

Return, oh Lord, to the heavens of glory

A sun of virtue that almost set

فصفا جوها واصفى عيوناً

قرحت عهد وجدها الاهدابا

So its atmosphere cleared and eyes healed

That a pact had wounded and eyelids hurt

فسلامٌ عليك يا أيها اللا

بسُ من خوف ربه جلبابا

Peace be upon you, oh you who

Wear the garb of fear of his Lord

وسلام عليك يا طاوي ال

طهر الذي نثره يحاكي الملابا

And peace be upon you, oh you who

Wrap the purity that mimics cloth

قد قبضت المفتاح فادخل إلى ب

يمت المعالي وفتح الابوابا

You have taken the key so enter the

Abode where glory lies and doors opened

واستزد من سلاح برك فالحر

ب عوان والبطل حث الركابا

And take more weapons of your blessings for

War has helpers and the hero speeds the steeds

وتسارت تلك الأراقم فوضى

تتحدى قلوبنا انقابا

And those symbols fell into disarray

Challenging our hearts to waver

ورأينا السم النقيع الذي سا

ل وكنا تحجوه قبلاً رضابا

And we saw the bitter poison that had

Flowed and we used to hastily guard against

فأجرنا من المصاب لئلا

يتبع الدهر بالمصاب مصابا

So spare us from affliction, lest

Time follow the affliction with affliction

وادعنا في رضاك تلقى قلوباً

تستطيب الموت الزؤام شرابا

And let us die content with you, receiving hearts

That relish drinking bitter death

واذا كان من قلانا اخانا

فلقد يبغض القراب القرايا

And if there was hatred in our hearts, brother

For kinship breeds hatred of kin

فأنرنا في ذا الظلام فإنا

قد مللنا لصبحه الارتقابا

So enlighten us in this darkness, for we

Are tired of awaiting its dawn

وتدبر للدين والعلم ترميم

ربوعٍ كادت تصير خرابا

And rebuild the land of knowledge and religion

Whose edges almost fell into ruin

قد عهدناك في الوقائع ليثاً

غالب الدهر فانثنى غلابا

We knew you in crises as a lion

Vanquishing fate, so fate yielded

لم يشب عزمك المشيب فأنت ال

نسر ما زلت تستجدُّ الشبابا

Neither old age weakened your resolve, for you are

An eagle whom youth constantly renews

لا ولا حطَّ من علاك مقالٌ

لفقته الحساد عنك اغتيابا

No saying has diminished your sublime status

Though enviers fabricated it in your absence

علموا اليوم ان ربك قاضٍ

عادلٌ يمنحُ الحقيق الثوابا

Today they know your Lord is a just

Judge who grants the truthful reward

فاغتفر ذنبهم اليك فقد جا

ؤوك للصفح كلهم طلابا

So forgive their sin against you for they have

Come to you seeking pardon altogether

نزعوا عنهم الحجاب وما شا

ؤووا بيوم ارتقاك عنك احتجابا

They removed the barrier from themselves and never

Were happier than the day you rose above them

فتباروا إلى لقاك وفوداً

وتتالوا حزائقاً أسرابا

So they competed to meet you in droves

And flocks hurried like throngs

هل علمت الأحزاب في ذلك ال

يوم الذي لم يدع بهم أحزابا

Do you know how the factions were on that

Day which left no factions among them?

يوم لاحوا على الجياد المذاكي

تنهب الأرض بالمسير انتهابا

The day they appeared on fine steeds

Plundering the land with travel's plunder

وتساروا بالمركبات قطاراً

وتساروا احبةً وصحابا

And they proceeded in carriages in a train

Proceeding in love and companionship

ودوى الرعد من بنادقهم ح

تى استهزوا قلب الفضاء اضطرابا

And thunder roared from their guns

Until they disturbed the heart of space into turmoil

يتهادون بالصوارم لدناً

يتثنون بالرماح صلابا

Brandishing swords constantly

Flexing spears stiffly

موكبٌ يفضح الكواكب نوراً

راح ينسابُ من وراك انسيابا

A procession whose light puts stars to shame

Flowing behind you in streams

بقلوبٍ تدافعت من حوال

يك دراكاً ترجو اليك اقترابا

With hearts that vied around you

Yearning to draw near you

وثغورٍ بواسم ما جلاها

غير مجلاك في العلى استطرابا

And with throats that nothing graced but you

So they were shocked in sublime astonishment

كل هذا وانت تمشي وديعاً

لا يثنيك امرهم اعجابا

All this while you walked gently

With their matter not swaying you with wonder

تلتقيهم طلق المحيا ويغشى

كل عافٍ ندى يديك ربابا

You met them with a bright smile and every

Healthy one was shaded by your hands' rain

واذا ما دجى لهم ليل خطبٍ

لحت فيهم بدر النهى فانجابا

And if the night of worries darkened them

The full moon of counseling shone upon them

واذا جف ترب رزقهم ال

فوك بالنيل عارضاً صيابا

And if the soil of their sustenance dried up

You watered it with the Nile's rushing rain

هكذا فلتك الرعاة وإلا

فلتقلد تلك العصيَّ الذئابا

So it is that you shepherd them, else

Take the staff to shepherd the wolves

إنما الحبرُ من ثوى قلبه ال

خلد ورجلاه تثويان الترابا

The ink is only from one whose heart harbored

Eternity while his feet harbor soil

وحمى جانب اليقين واعلى

راية الصدق تخجل الكذابا

And he protected the side of certainty and held high

The flag of truth that shames the liar

واقام القسطاس بين رعايا

ه وما زال للرشاد نصابا

And he erected the scale between his subjects

And did not stop being a guide

هكذا قد براك ربك حبراً

لم يدع فيك للحواسد عابا

This is how your Lord exonerated you as an ink

Leaving no flaws for enviers to blame

ما سمعنا لشائبٍ عنك قولاً

غير ان المفضال بطرس شابا

We never heard any taint about you

Except that the esteemed are youthful

ان يك الشيب فيك عيباً فاني

شاكرٌ في انتقاصك العيابا

If gray hair is a flaw in you I

Thank you for erasing flaws

هل نكير عليك انك للم

عوز غوث تجيئه وهابا

Can we blame you for being

Succor for the vulnerable that comes obliging?

هل نكير عليك انك ذوق

لبٍ بحب الإله يذكى التهابا

Can we blame you for being of refined

Heart aflame with love for God?

هل نكيرٌ عليك انك راعٍ

في رعاياهُ يألف الاتعابا

Can we blame you for being a shepherd who

Befriends hardships in shepherding?

كم قتلت الكرى بسيف من ال

سهد وامسيت بينهم جوابا

How much hatred you killed with sword of

Joy while becoming solace among them

فرددت الغاوي وقومت منا

داً واجبرت من يداني القضابا

So you guided the lost and stood up

Pulpits and mended those who approach judging

وتدبرت معهداً سال علماً

وتقى فاستفزهم طلابا

And you founded an institute of knowledge

That provoked them, attracting students

فبه مغتذى العلوم وفيه

موردٌ ينهل الفتى آدابا

In it is the pursuit of sciences and in it

A font the youth draws wisdom from

وبه قيد الهوى قلب حبٍ

رقة القيد في هواك استطابا

And in it the passion of love is chained

The softness of its chains in your love deemed good

ولقد قد قضى عهوداً طوالاً

يتقاضى هذه العهود اقترابا

And it has fulfilled lifelong pacts

With time drawing near this pact

تارةً ينشد الربوع صباءً

تارةً ينشد الزمان عتابا

Sometimes singing the prime of youth

Sometimes singing time's reproach

فإذا بالزمان عاد وفياً

بعدما كان خادعاً خلابا

So time returned loyal

After being a cheating seducer

فتثنى يوم ارتقائك بشراً

وتصابى ولم يكن يتصابى

The day you rose it sang glad tidings

And coyly smiled which it did not use to do

نزلوا ابحر الثناء فألفوا

كل بحرٍ منك استعار العبابا

They embarked on seas of praise so each

Sea borrowed its moisture from you

فتصفح اقوالهم تقرأ العر

ف فصولاً والحب بابا فبابا

So browse their words and you read nobility

And love part after part

واقتبله سفراً روى عنك ما لم

يبق في خاطر الزمان ارتيابا

And receive it as a journey that tells about you

What time did not leave room for doubting

لا تجزني فانني لك في د

ينٍ من الفضل ان أردت الحسابا

Do not blame me, for to you I owe so much

Virtue that if you wanted counting, it would not run out

وكتابي عهدٌ علي بديني

فلهذا ذيلت باسمي الكتابا

And my book is a pact I have of my religion

So for that I appended my name to the book
