1. لبس الأفقُ جلابيب الغمام

    فاختفى النورُ بها والنجمُ غار

    The horizon wore the robes of clouds

    So the light and stars were hidden by them and set

  2. وهزيم الرعد قد هز الاكام

    وانتضى البرق من السحب الشفار

    And the roar of thunder shook the mountains

    And lightning flashed from the dripping clouds

  3. سح من قلب السما الغيث الركام

    وسرى الريح يغني في القفار

    Rain poured from the heart of the sky

    And the wind blew singing in the deserts

  4. كلهم في بيت لحم رقدوا

    غير ام اللَه والطفل الصغير

    They all slept in Bethlehem

    Except the Mother of God and the little child

  5. لبثت راكعة والمذود

    قام فيه طفلها لا في السرير

    She remained kneeling and the cradle

    Her child rose in it, not in the bed

  6. تلك أم وفتاها ربها

    آيةٌ تقضي علينا بالعجب

    That mother and her devotion to her Lord

    A sign that fills us with wonder

  7. أي حبٍّ كان فيه حبها

    أي بشر وسرور وطرب

    What love was in her love

    What human joy and delight

  8. كلما اهوى عليه قلبها

    شعرت ان الحشا منها انجذب

    Whenever her heart swooned over Him

    She felt the zeal fade from her

  9. ثم قالت ايهذا الولد

    انت ربي وعلى كلٍّ قدير

    Then she said: “O this boy

    You are my Lord and over all things Powerful.”

  10. هكذا ظلت لديه تسجد

    وهويتني نحوها الطرف القرير

    Thus she remained bowing before Him

    And the bright eyelid drew me toward her

  11. اوشك الليل يولي والثنا

    كاد يفترُّ به ثغر الرقيع

    The night was about to turn and depart

    Dawn was about to yawn with the smile of a maiden

  12. والاله الطفل عاف الوسنا

    يصطلي ما بين انفاس القطيع

    And the infant God granted sleep

    Lying between the breaths of the flock

  13. امه في قربه تشدو الغنا

    وهو مفتر لها غير هجيع

    His mother singing hymns to Him

    While He smiled at her without sleeping

  14. طرفه فيها مجالٌ واليد

    تتسنى فوق مجلاه المنير

    His gaze was upon her and his hand

    Stroked his shining forehead

  15. بات يقظاناً وباتت تنشد

    والهوى ينفخ والغيث همير

    He spent the night awake and she spent it singing

    While passion blew and rain drizzled

  16. نم حبيبي فقد امتدَّ الغسق

    وتوالى الغيث في قلب السحاب

    Sleep my beloved, for the night has stretched out

    And the rain continued in the heart of the clouds

  17. قرس البرد فما هذا الأرق

    كيف هذا الضحك في هذا العذاب

    The cold has gnawed, so why this insomnia?

    How is this laughter in this torment?

  18. جسمك الغض من البدر فرق

    لا سرير لا صلاء لا ثياب

    Your tender body brighter than the full moon

    No bed, no prayer rug, no clothes

  19. انت مع ذا ضاحك لا ترقد

    ضاجع في مذود لا تستدير

    You are with the One who laughs and does not sleep

    Lying in a cradle unable to toss and turn

  20. نم حبيبي حان انا نهجد

    فالدجى شدّ المطايا للمسير

    Sleep my beloved, the time has come for us to wake

    For darkness has saddled the mounts for the journey

  21. ان تنم وافتك احلام الذهب

    وعلى اجفانك امتد السلام

    If you sleep may you be visited by dreams of gold

    And may peace extend over your eyelids

  22. فالكرى يذهب أنواع التعب

    إنما السهد عذاب للأنام

    For worries will fade with a little sleep

    Insomnia is but torment for people

  23. ليلة يا ابني تقضي بالعجب

    ليلة تسهر ما طال الدوام

    A night, my son, full of wonders

    A night whose duration astounds

  24. ليلةٌ عذراء فيها تلدُ

    ربها طبقاً لما قال البشير

    An immaculate night in which

    She gives birth to her Lord as the Evangelist said

  25. يا بني آدم تيهوا واسعدوا

    فلكم قد ولد الفادي المجير

    O children of Adam, rejoice and be glad

    For the Redeemer, the Rescuer is born

  26. لم تزل مريمُ في ذاك النغم

    وابنها مبتسمٌ يأبى الرقاد

    Mary continued in that chant

    While her son smiled, refusing to sleep

  27. ثم قالت ولدي اما تنم

    فانا ابكي لما طال السهاد

    Then she said: “My child, will you not sleep

    For I weep from prolonged insomnia”

  28. لفظت ذلك والدمعُ انسجم

    وانحنت فوق فتاها بارتعاد

    She uttered this and her tears flowed

    She leaned over her boy, trembling

  29. مذ رآها طفلها ترتعد

    وعلى وجنتها الدمع يسير

    When her child saw her trembling

    And the tears flowing down her cheek

  30. اغمض الجفن وطاب المرقد

    ومضى يحلم في شأن المصير

    He closed his eyes and sleeping was sweet

    And he went on dreaming about destiny

  31. وقفة في بيت لحم للعفاف

    لم تزل سراً عجبيباً في البشر

    A halt in Bethlehem for the chaste

    It has remained a wondrous secret among mortals

  32. مريم تضجع في كهف الخراف

    ابنها اللَه المسيح المنتظر

    Mary lies down in the cave of sheep

    Her son, God, the Awaited Messiah

  33. لا قميص لا فراش لا لحاف

    لا بكاء لا ضجيج لا ضجر

    No shirt, no mattress, no blanket

    No crying, no commotion, no discontent

  34. ركعت قرب فتاها تعبد

    خالق الأكوان فحاص الضمير

    She knelt near her boy in worship

    Of the Creator of the cosmos, the Knower of conscience

  35. ابنها وهو الاله الامجد

    نائمٌ ما بين تبن وشعير

    Her son and He is the Glorious God

    Sleeping among the straw and barley
