Will you lose, besides the crown and the power to forbid and command,

your riches too—and not even be granted captivity in a palace?

Are you guarded now for fear that you may flee, after

you once were guarded against every danger stealing through the night?

    Answer me, O Abd al-Hamid, for I

call to you, O Abd al-Hamid, without fear.

Once I addressed you grandly as the King,

describing you as sovereign over sea and land.

Now tell me: where are sea and land and lofty glory?

Where is the death that issued from your mouth among mankind?

Where are the maidens and beautiful women, hastening

to cast pearl-bright mouths upon your hands?

How have the Bosphorus’s waters grown clear since you departed,

when its red waves once churned like a roaring dust storm?

And how do people now pass beside Yıldız,

when once it was guarded even from an eagle’s eye?

If someone says, “Abd al-Hamid,” we suppose

he means another—for among famous names you have become unknown.

Your name is called out in derision, though before

you were deposed, it terrified thought whenever it crossed the mind.

By your life, tell me what you wrought, and what it was

that hurled you forcibly from the palace of the caliphate.

Was it not the injustice by which, at every hour,

you showed the world the darkness of Resurrection Day?

Was it not a reign whose long tenure was steeped in oppression,

in which you sated the predators of sea and wilderness?

Did you slaughter your own sons, O tyrannical king,

yet begrudge your sons even a grave, O king?

You lavished them upon the fish by the thousand,

yet begrudged the troops their provisions—down to nothing.

Morning and evening, you delighted in uttering

your decrees of dreadful death and harm.

Unable to win a true victory, you wished

to taste, in slaughtering the people, some semblance of victory.

Thirty years you passed in an intoxication

born of bloodshed, not the intoxication of wine.

You left around you none but a destitute

traitor, and placed no hope in an honest freeman.

You scattered the people until they streamed away

into exile, hoping to find safety in exile.

    You made life so straitened for us that you starved us;

now hunger and go into exile, O you who gorged the fish of the sea.

Under you, even a sentence of captivity was a favor

to us; now taste it—is captivity’s fare sweet?

Taste the dire fruit of tyranny, and blame no

enemy: you yourself have reaped it from time.

If you desire my sincere counsel, then begin

with your grief, and hold fast to silence and patience.

Beware lest some impulse entice you toward

a scheme that makes what has passed seem sweet to recover.

Not every time a water-drawer lowers into the well

can he protect his jars from breaking in that well.

Yesterday you escaped the cutting blade; but if you return

to your scheming, today you will not escape being cut off.

    Since you fear death, hold fast to patient endurance;

bid royal majesty farewell, and accept this meager lot.

Another has risen above the throne and mounted

the caliphate, whose wearer is robed in pride.

You two are kindred shoots from a single root, yet between him

and you lies the difference between the eye and the rising full moon.

For bringing one’s children to ease and blessing

is not like bringing them to drink affliction and hardship.

So sleep in your exile, and leave your brother to

cleanse what you polluted in that age.

Thus fate has willed it between you two, and

you have exchanged sweetness and bitterness between you.
