I wished, while Beirut’s heat held sway,
To live in no month but Kānūn,
And to have, among my means, something to carry me
In summer between Jezzine and Sannine.
Do you not see me—how this heat has melted me,
Until it has dried the very blood within my veins?
As though Beirut, this summer, had been blasted
With devils’ breaths out of Hell.
