الستُ من القوم الأُلى تعهدينهم

إذا اعوزوا ذلوا وان عشقوا هانوا

You are the dearest of people, you who I entrust

When in need they are weak, and when they love they are humiliated

يهون عليَّ العمرُ أطويه جائعاً

وحولي أهلٌ جائعون وغلانُ

Life seems short as I live it hungry

While my family around me is hungry and thirsty

ولا اتلقى الزاد ان لم يكن له

بكفي من مالي المحصلِ اثمان

I cannot find provisions unless

With my own hands I earn the price

وأهون من ذا ان تصدي وتصرمي

وتجتاحني بين الجوانحِ نيرانُ

It is easier than having you turn away

And fires burn within my chest

ولا اتعدى شيمةً تُنكرُ الهوى

متى استعبد الإنسانَ في الحب إنسانُ

I cannot exceed the propriety that rejects passion

When one human enslaves another in love

فإني من قوم قُساةٍ إذا قسا

العشيرُ وان لان العشير لهم لانوا

For I am from a people that are harsh when harsh

And tender when the clan is tender to them

كلانا تُرابٌ يا ثريا فخففي

العتو فما في الحبِّ عبدٌ وسلطانُ

We are both but dust, so lighten up

On arrogance, for in love there is no slave or sultan

هبي أنك الروحُ السماويُّ محتداً

لك الخلدُ مهدٌ والملائكُ اخوانُ

Grant me that you are the heavenly soul embodied

Yours is eternity, a cradle, and the angels are brothers

فيا ملكاً يا ابن الملائك نظرةً

إليَّ بلا شزرٍ فما انا شيطانُ

So king, son of angels, cast a glance

At me without disdain, for I am no devil
