1. يا مرسلاً طي الكتاب وريقةً

    نقدية يرضي بها أيوبا

    O you who sent a missive and a sheet

    Of paper currency to please Ayub

  2. اعرفت أنك قد قضيت الدين اض

    عافاً بما أرسلته مكتوبا

    I knew you had paid off the debt completely

    With what you sent in writing

  3. شعرٌ يساوي كل حرف منه لي

    رات متى سام الأديب أديبا

    Poetry where each letter equals

    For me treasures when the literate is literary

  4. قد كان أيوبٌ صديقك دائناً

    فغدا بدينك مثقلاً مكروبا

    Ayub was your creditor and friend

    So he became burdened and troubled by your debt

  5. واعرته شعري ولست أرى به

    مثلاً يكافئُ دينك المطلوبا

    I made him know my poetry but I don't see in it

    An equal to your requested debt

  6. شتان بين النسر حلق في الفضا

    والنمل دب على التراب دبيبا

    Far is the difference between an eagle that flew in the sky

    And an ant that crawled on the dust creeping

  7. عذراً أخا الخلق الكريم ومرحباً

    بك شاعراً ومتاجراً وطبيبا

    Sorry my noble and kind brother, and welcome

    To you as a poet, merchant, and doctor

  8. غلغلت مالك في جيوب البائس

    ين ورحت تغذو بالقريض قلوبا

    You busied your money in the pockets of the miserable

    And went to nourish hearts with poetry

  9. يا صاحب الأموال والأدب النض

    ير سلمت للوطن العزيز حبيبا

    O owner of wealth, refined literature

    You surrendered to the beloved homeland a lover

  10. المرءُ محسوب عليه ذكاؤه

    لكن ذكاؤك لم يكن محسوبا

    One's intelligence is attributed to him

    But your intelligence was not accounted for

  11. نحصي عليك مآثراً وسواك من

    أهل الغنى نحصي عليه ذنوبا

    We count your achievements, and count for others like you

    Of the wealthy their sins

  12. ميشال حسبك ان شعري لم يجز

    ثوب المديح على سواك قشيبا

    Michel, it is enough that my poetry did not suit

    The garment of praise on anyone but you

  13. قد شاب في ذم الحياة ولم يجد

    في غير وجهك طالعاً محبوبا

    It grew grey blaming life and did not find

    In any face but yours a beloved rising

  14. عش أين شئت فأينما حل الكر

    يم فتى المناقب لا يكون غريبا

    Live wherever you wish, for wherever the noble settled

    The man of virtues does not become a stranger
