1. صبراً ولو فجع الهدى بالهادي

    ليس الفناء على الخلود بعاد

    Patience, even if the rightly guided one grieves for the guide

    Non-existence is not far from immortality

  2. ما كان من صنع النفوس فانه

    يبقى ولو سلت من الأجساد

    Whatever the souls create remains

    Even if it slips from the bodies

  3. وبه الخلود ولا خلود بغيره

    للمرء من مال ومن أولاد

    Through it there is eternity, no eternity without it

    For a person, from money and from children

  4. ومتى استقل مريده يوماً به

    لاقى المنية وهي خير مراد

    And when his follower becomes independent one day through him

    He meets his death, and it is the best purpose

  5. والموت نوم يستلذ به الألى

    لم يألفوا في العيش غير جهاد

    And death is a sleep relished by the refined

    Who were not accustomed in life except to struggle

  6. يا أيها الباكي حيال موسد

    لم يهو قبل اليوم فوق وساد

    O you who cries for the pillow

    That did not give comfort before this day over a pillow

  7. لا تقلق الغافي فمن سهر الليا

    لي لا يرى دعة بغير رقاد

    Do not disturb the sleeping one, for whoever stayed up at night

    Cannot see tranquility except in slumber

  8. خفف بكاءك فهي أول هجعة

    يحظى بها نعوم بعد سهاد

    Lessen your crying for it is the first rest

    Granted to the soft after fatigue

  9. لا تبك من لم يجر مدمع عينه

    حيناً ولو كحلتها بقتاد

    Do not cry for one whose eyes did not shed a tear

    Even if kohl lined them with surma

  10. لا تبك من كره البكاء لانه

    وهن وليس الوهن في الآساد

    Do not cry for one who disliked crying because it

    Is weakness, and weakness is not for lions

  11. هجر العرين وكان شبلاً واجتوى

    الوادي وظل بروحه في الوادي

    He left the lair when he was a cub and dwelled

    The valley, and his soul remained in the valley

  12. وأتى بلاداً لا تعيش ليوثها

    معقودة الأعناق بالأوتاد

    And he came to a land where its lions do not live

    With necks bound by pegs

  13. ملأ الفضاء زئيره فتنكبت

    عن قومه الارزاء وهي كوادي

    His roar filled the space so the noble cedars

    Swerved away from him like valleys

  14. لولاه لم يطلع على لبنان بع

    د الحرب ميمون من الأعياد

    Without him the auspicious Eid would not have dawned

    On Lebanon after the war

  15. قد راح داعية إلى انقاذه

    تحت القساطل والبنود ينادي

    He went appealing for its salvation

    Beneath the bridges and pillars calling out

  16. يتلو على الحلفاء نص عهودهم

    كالند يقرأها على انداد

    Reciting to the allies the text of their covenants

    Like a boulder reading them to peers

  17. ما جاءهم مستجدياً لبلاده

    بل جاء مدرعاً بحق بلاد

    He did not come to them begging for his country

    Rather he came armed with the rights of the country

  18. لما دعوا لباهم بصوارم

    ارزية نفرت من الأغماد

    When they called their swords against his chaste

    Land, they sprang from their sheaths

  19. وأراهم الوطن الذي تركوه دا

    ئلة عليه دولة الأوغاد

    And showed them the country they had left

    Wronged, ruled by the wicked

  20. وتخلفوا عنه فكانت نكبة

    عمياء غادرت الربوع بوادي

    And they lagged behind it and so came blind calamity

    That left the lands in valleys

  21. كم عنتر فجعت به عبلى وكم

    كعب اصيب به فؤاد سعاد

    How many an Antar did Ubla grieve over,

    And how many a Ka'b's heart was stricken with sadness

  22. لولا المرؤة وهي لبنانية

    لم ينبلج فلق الصباح لغاد

    Were it not for the woman, the Lebanese woman

    The dawn of morning would not have shone for the departed

  23. ولما رأيت الأرز عاد إليه سا

    جعه ولا سال النمير لصاد

    And had I not seen the cedar return to it

    Lamenting while the pine did not shed resin for the departed

  24. هي نهضة مردية احيا بها

    نعوم كل مفاخر الأجداد

    It is a national renaissance that revived through it

    The glories of ancestors for the soft ones

  25. خلعت على لبنان من دنياه ثو

    ب العيد اشهب بعد ثوب حداد

    It bestowed upon Lebanon from its world the attire

    Of Eid, gray after the attire of mourning

  26. وابى فتاها ان تنام عيونه

    فأقام للحدثان بالمرصاد

    And its youth refused to sleep so it stood

    On guard for events lying in wait

  27. عرفت به باريس أول زورة

    حراً يصارع طاغي استعباد

    Through it Paris knew the first visit

    Of a free man fighting colonial oppression

  28. ورأت به بالأمس اشرف عامل

    يعني باصلاح ودرء فساد

    And it saw in it yesterday the most noble worker

    Interested in reform and preventing corruption

  29. متكبداً ما يقصم الأصلاب من

    هم ويصدع أصلب الأكباد

    Bearing what breaks the firmest determination

    And splits the most resolute livers

  30. حتى دهاه الموت مغتالاً ولم

    يصرعه إلا في مجال جلاد

    Until death assassinated him in the battlefield

    And only the arena of executioners could fell him

  31. فكأنما لبنان زلزل فوق با

    ريس وألقى أعظم الأطواد

    So it is as if Lebanon shook over Paris

    And cast off the greatest of its pillars

  32. وكأنما لبنان يوم نعيه

    غاد على الدنيا بيوم ننادي

    And as if on the day of his death Lebanon

    Descended upon the world with a day of lamentation

  33. كدرت موارده وحر نسيمه

    وهوت سواجعه على الأعواد

    Its waters were turbid and its breeze was hot

    And its streams fell upon the pegs

  34. والمشرق العربي ضج لدولة

    عربية مفجوعة بعماد

    And the Arab East roared for an Arab state

    Grieving for its pillar

  35. هي لوعة في وائل من بعد سح

    بان وفي ذبيان بعد زياد

    It is an agony after Suhban and Thabian after Ziyad

    And a wailing of the letter Dhaad among its remnants

  36. ومناحة للضاد في أفيائها

    من سفح لبنان إلى بغداد

    From the foothills of Lebanon to Baghdad

    No wonder, for the bond that the cunning broke

  37. لا غرو فالبند الذي نكلت به

    الدهياء من أعلى بنود الضاد

    Is the highest of the bonds of Dhaad

    O you who saw the world too narrow for your ambitions

  38. يا من رأى الدنيا تضيق على مطا

    محه فحلق فوق سبع شداد

    So you soared above the seven solid rocks

    You did not die in exile, your guidance filled

  39. ما مت مغترباً وأنت هداك ملء

    الخافقين بنوره الوقاد

    The bosoms with its flaming light

    You lived in both homelands, possessing people who boast

  40. قد عشت في الوطنين ذا أهل تع

    ز بطارف من نعمة وتلاد

    Of the goods and children you reared

    You allotted your meadow rest to the visitors

  41. وأجزت للرواد روضك نجعة

    وتركت وردك شرعة الوراد

    And left your roses lawful for the visitors

    So upon the bare from your loss is a cloak

  42. فعلى العواري من ضيعك بردة

    وعلى الغوارث من يديك أيادي

    And upon the deprived from you hands are gifts

    And upon the press that watched over you a bloody imprint

  43. وعلى الصحافة من يراعك مسحة

    دموية مرسومة بمداد

    Drawn with a pen

    And for each letter of your guidance

  44. ولكل حرف من بيانك في الهدى

    معنى يسيل به نجيع فؤاد

    Is a meaning that wets the core of hearts

    You are the martyr, and none is more honorable than you

  45. انت الشهيد وليس أكرم منك اب

    طال لنا ماتوا على الأعواد

    Among those who lingered for us on the stakes

    Sleep my beloved, for only graves are devoid

  46. نم يا حبيبي فالمقابر وحدها

    تخلو من الأعداء والحساد

    Of enemies and envious ones
