O spring of Barouk, had you been a lover

You would not have been the finest to my fervent blood boiling.

Had someone who knows love passed by you before me

You would not have remained until today in such ignorance.

Do you not see the willow leaning over you

Yearning, swaying for a beloved seeking connection?

Do you not see it letting down its tresses

Laying its tendrils, strand over strand, in fervor?

So the spring of Barouk replied: Had you known

The secret of love as I do, you would not blame me,

When you try to maintain love, make the meeting

Brief, for length of union in love is like death,

And the lover is barred from the beloved if passion overcomes him,

So be cold like me, and flow calmly like me.
