1. تركوه على الصليب مسمر

    دمه من كلومه يتفجر

    They left Him nailed upon the cross

    His blood gushing out from His wounds

  2. هو رب السماء يشقى ويقهر

    ويعاني نزع الحمام الأحمر

    He is the Lord of the skies in torment and subjugation

    Suffering the plucking of the red dove

  3. اسلم الروحَ بعد طول العذابِ

    فغدا الكونُ كله في اضطراب

    He yielded up His soul after prolonged agony

    So the whole universe fell into turmoil

  4. غابت الشمس قبل وقت الغياب

    ودجت ظلمةٌ على الأرض تنشر

    The sun set before its time of setting

    And a darkness spread over the earth unfurling

  5. بعد ذا شققت بطون القبور

    مثلما فطرت قلوبُ الصخور

    After that the bellies of graves were ripped open

    As hearts of rocks were split open too

  6. وبدا البرق في الدُجى كسطورِ

    من سعيرٍ والرعدُ في الجوِّ زمجر

    And lightning flashed in the darkness like lines

    Of raging fire and thunder roared in the air

  7. ثم سادَ السكون في الغبراءِ

    تحت حزنِ الطبيعةِ البكماءِ

    Then stillness prevailed in the dust

    Under the mute sorrow of nature

  8. ولوى للهدوء ذو الضوضاءِ

    وإلى الكهف كل حيٍّ ادبر

    And the noisy one submitted to tranquility

    And every living thing retreated to its burrow

  9. ذاك خطبٌ قد أخرسَ الأطيارا

    فسجت واستظلتِ الأوكارا

    It was a misfortune that silenced the birds

    So they tucked themselves in and took shade

  10. غير أن الاشجار والأزهارا

    كان ما بينها حديثٌ يُذكر

    Except that the trees and flowers

    Had between them a conversation to recount

  11. قال منها صنوبرٌ في الشآم

    مات ربي فادي جميع الأنام

    A pine in Damascus said

    My Lord, redeemer of all people, died

  12. فاسودادي ووحدتي في مقامي

    قد أشارا إلى حداد الصنوبر

    So my gloom and loneliness in my station

    Signaled the pine's mourning

  13. وبصر فند اشعرت بالحداد

    كرمة بعد موت ذاك الفادي

    And a vine realized the mourning

    For the death of that redeemer

  14. عناقيدها إذ غدت في اسوداد

    تقطر الدمع أحمراً إذ تعصر

    Its grapes, now blackened

    Ooze tears red as it squeezes them out

  15. ثم قال السرو الذي في الكرمل

    مات ربي فالحزن بي يتأصل

    Then the cedar that is in Carmel said

    My Lord died so grief takes root in me

  16. وبظلي كل القبور تظلل

    وبغصني أحرم الطير موكر

    And with my shade all graves are shaded

    And with my branch the birds are deprived of perching

  17. ثم لاح الصفصاف في الحسرات

    بغصون إلى الثرى مائلات

    Then the willow appeared in regrets

    With branches drooping to the ground

  18. تتدلى من فوق نهر الفرات

    ودموع الصباح منها تنثر

    Hanging from over the Euphrates River

    Scattering the morning dew from it

  19. وإلى بقس قاف نفخة ريح

    حملت من زفير صدر المسيح

    And to a cypress a gust of wind came

    Bearing from the breath in Christ's chest

  20. زفرةً غادرته في تبريح

    فذوى عرقه وقد كان أخضر

    A breath that left Him in deliverance

    So its sweat evaporated though it had been green

  21. ثم قال الشربين قد مات ربي

    فأنا بعده موالٍ لكربي

    Then said the nettle, my Lord died

    So after Him I am loyal to my bitterness

  22. وبانفاسي اللظية يجري

    سم داء يبت حبل العمر

    And with my hot breaths running

    Is the poison that destroys life's cord

  23. وإذا النحل جاء يمتص زهري

    فبزهري للنحل موتٌ مقرر

    And when the bees come to suck my flowers

    With my flowers, death for the bees is assured

  24. ثم صاحت شقائق النعمان

    مات فغرت أحزاني

    Then the anemones cried out

    He died so my sorrows gaped open

  25. فانظروا فحمةً مكان جناني

    فهي قلبي من بعد ما قد تسعر

    So look at the ember instead of my garden

    For it is my heart after it caught fire

  26. كل نبتٍ بادٍ على الغبراء

    حركتهُ عواملُ البأساءِ

    Every withered plant on the dust

    Was stirred by elements of affliction

  27. ما خلا الجور صاحب الكبرياء

    شهد الخطب دون ان يتأثر

    Except for pride, the owner of arrogance

    Who witnessed the misfortune without being affected

  28. حينما قيل مات فادي الأنام

    قال قد مات عن ذوي الآثام

    When it was said the redeemer of people died

    He said, one who died for the wicked

  29. فأنا لا أراع من ذا الحمام

    إذ أنا طاهر فلا اتغير

    So I do not care about this dove

    For I am pure, I do not change

  30. كان إذ ذاك طائراً في القضاء

    ملك ينتحي ربوع السماء

    There was then a bird in the district

    An angel roaming the skies

  31. بين كفيه ضم كأس دماء

    نالها من لدى الصليب الأطهر

    In his hands he held a cup of blood

    That he obtained from by the most pure cross

  32. سمع الحور إذ غدا يتكلم

    فأذاب الملاك من ذلك الدم

    The angel heard the haughty one speak

    So he melted some of that blood

  33. فوق عرق الحور الذي ما تألم

    لمصاب له الجماد تفطر

    Over the angel's sweat that did not suffer

    For an affliction the inanimate burst apart

  34. ثم ناداه يا أخا الإعجاب

    ان تكن قد ثبت يوم المصاب

    Then he called him, O brother of wonder

    If you were steadfast on the day of affliction

  35. فلتقم دائماً اليف اضطراب

    يا أخا الكبرياء ربك أكبر

    Then forever stand the disturbance

    O brother of arrogance, your Lord is Greater

  36. وكذا الحور منذ ذاك الزمان

    ألف الارتجاج في كل آنِ

    And so the haughty one since that time

    Got used to shaking at every moment

  37. وحفيف الأوراق في الأغصان

    كاسانٍ بأمره قد أخبر

    And the rustling of leaves in the branches

    Two cups at His command, He informed
