1. وليلةٍ حامت عليها النجوم

    خافقةً وجداً لنأي القمر

    On a night when the stars flickered anxiously

    As the moon withdrew to a distant horizon

  2. سهرتها وحدي أليف الهموم

    ومن يوالي الهم والي السهر

    I spent it alone, intimate with worries

    He who befriends worries, befriends sleeplessness

  3. النفس في وادي أساها تهيم

    والعين ما بين دراري الرقيع

    My soul wanders lost in a valley of sorrow

    My eyes shifting between eyelids heavy with sleep

  4. ولم أزل حتى تساري النسيم

    يحمل أنات فؤاد وجيع

    I lingered until the breeze began to blow

    Carrying the groans of my aching heart

  5. ولاح لي في الحي طيفٌ حزين

    يدلف ما بين سجوف الظلام

    A sad specter appeared to me in the dark alley

    Slipping in amidst the gloom of darkness

  6. يطارح الليل اساه الكمين

    والحي اهلوه جميعاً نيام

    Tossing off the night's veil of hiding

    While the entire neighborhood was fast asleep

  7. وعندما دانيته أبصرت

    جيناي حسناء بشرخ الصبا

    When I drew near and saw it

    A beautiful maiden peered through the light of dawn

  8. ومذ رأتني ماثلاً سترت

    براحتيها وجهها الكوكبا

    When she saw me standing there

    She covered her face with her palms, that planet

  9. آنستها مني بقولٍ لطيف

    مهلاً فما أدركت غير النصير

    I calmed her with gentle words

    Wait, I have understood nothing but the good omen

  10. هذا فتىً يرثي لحالي الضعيف

    وليس عند اللَه أمر عسير

    This is a lad who mourns his feeble state

    Nothing is beyond God's power to make right

  11. فانزلت عن وجنتيها اللثام

    كفين شقا عن نظير الشقيق

    She lowered the veil from her rosy cheeks

    Two hands revealed the glowing ruby

  12. وجاوبتني بفصيح الكلام

    ذي هند هل تعوفها يا صديقي

    And answered me in eloquent speech

    That of an Indian beauty, do you know her my friend?

  13. رباه ما هذا التلاقي الغريب

    وما لهند كالغزال الطريد

    What is this strange encounter

    When India is like a hunted gazelle

  14. وما لهندٍ وجدها والحبيب

    في معزلٍ يا هند اين السويد

    When India and her beloved

    Are set apart, oh India, what has become of happiness?

  15. فانطرحت ذاهلةً لا تعي

    واصفر جوري المحيا النضير

    She fell silent, no longer aware

    My cheek drained of all color

  16. وبت أذرى فوقها ادمعي

    حتى أفاقت بالبكا والزفير

    I stood over her, weeping

    Until she awoke crying and wailing

  17. وبد أن أملكها رشدها

    أفصح عنها دمعها فالكلام

    I had to help her regain her senses

    Her tears elucidated when words could not

  18. وخبرت كيف انطوي سعدها

    وما انطوى في صدرها من سهام

    I learned how her happiness had crumbled

    And what arrows had pierced her heart

  19. عرفت هنداً منذ عشر سنين

    حسناءَ في حجرِ أبيها الفقير

    I had known India ten years before

    A beauty in her poor father's lap

  20. لا أم لا اهل لا معين

    إلا أبٌ شيخٌ شديد النكير

    No mother, no family, no helper

    Just an elderly father, strict and stern

  21. عرفتها جارتنا العامله

    لخياطةً في ليلها والنهار

    I knew her as our seamstress neighbor

    Sewing night and day

  22. جميلةً لكنها فاضله

    غنيةً بالخلق لا بالنضار

    Lovely but virtuous

    Rich in character though not in means

  23. ما أبصرت بيروت هنداً على

    غير طريقٍ للمصلى القريب

    Beirut never saw India on any path

    Other than to the nearby mosque

  24. لا بدعةٌ في ثوبها لا حلى

    إلا حياءٌ وجمالٌ عجيب

    No fashion or jewelry graced her dress

    Only an awe-inspiring grace and charm

  25. وزارني يوماً صديقٌ غني

    من بعلبك البلدِ الزاهرِ

    One day a wealthy friend visited me

    From the flourishing town of Baalbek

  26. ما أبصر الحسناءَ حتى مُني

    بفتنةٍ من لحظها الساحر

    No sooner did he glimpse her beauty than he wished

    To be spellbound by her enchanting glance

  27. وبات يستطلعني أمرها

    والوجدُ قد جد ولجَّ الغرام

    He began to ask me about her

    Passion stirred now that he had fallen in love

  28. وسره لما رأى فقرها

    أن اقتناص الظبي سهل المرام

    Her poverty encouraged him

    For plucking this gazelle seemed an easy game

  29. وباح للشيخ بنجوى الضمير

    فابتهج الشيخ بذاك النصيب

    He whispered to the Sheikh his secret longing

    The Sheikh rejoiced at this fortune

  30. واقترنت جارتنا بالأمير

    تستبدلُ الطمر بثوبٍ قشيب

    And our neighbor was joined to the Prince

    Exchanging her rags for a fine gown

  31. ووسوس الحلي على المعصم

    ولألأ الماس على الأنمل

    Bangles adorned her wrists

    Diamonds glittered on her fingers

  32. وسافرت مع بعلها المنعم

    تصاحب العيش ببالٍ خلي

    And she traveled with her beneficent husband

    Enjoying a carefree life

  33. واصطحبت هندٌ أباها إلى

    مرتعها يقضي شتاءَ الحياة

    India took her father with her

    To spend the autumn of his life in comfort

  34. فجرَّ ذيلَ العمرِ فيه على

    رغدٍ إلى أن حان حينٌ فمات

    Dragging out his days in luxury

    Until the appointed time came and he died

  35. مضي وهندٌ أُمُّ طفلٍ فطيم

    وبعلها مستمسكٌ بالوفاء

    India remained, mother of a tender child

    And her husband loyal in fidelity

  36. لكن هو الدهر المداجي الذميم

    يستل من ضلع الهناء الشقاء

    But cruel time, that traitorous scoundrel

    Can strip joy and sow adversity

  37. خمسةُ أعوامٍ قضاها فريد

    في حبِّ ذاك الملكِ الطاهرِ

    Five years she spent blissful with her love

    In that pure and unspoiled union

  38. ثم تجافى كلَّ طبعٍ حميدٍ

    واستبدلَ الطاهرَ بالعاهرِ

    Then his noble nature completely changed

    And he replaced the innocent with the depraved

  39. واستفَّ يسترسلُ في المنكرات

    مستهلكاً ثروته بالقمار

    He took to practicing all manner of vice

    Squandering his wealth in gambling

  40. واستعبدته عادةُ المسكرات

    وراحَ قواداً على كل عار

    Enslaved by the habit of alcohol

    Becoming a pimp for every shame

  41. وحال حال الغادةِ التاعسه

    واصبحت مع طفلها في جحيم

    Thus changed the state of the miserable woman

    She and her child were plunged into hell

  42. مرذولةً معزولةً يائسه

    تبكي على عهدِ الصفاءِ القديم

    Despised, isolated, hopeless

    Weeping for the old days of purity

  43. خمسةُ أعوامٍ مضت في النعم

    وخمسةٌ من بعدها في شقاء

    Five years passed in prosperity

    Then five after full of misery

  44. في سهرٍ في جزعٍ في ألم

    في محنٍ في غصصٍ في بكاء

    In sleepless sorrow and pain

    Affliction, torment, and tears

  45. قد ضيَّعَ المالَ وباعَ الديارِ

    ولميدع من مقتنى للمعاش

    He wasted the money and sold the houses

    Leaving no possessions to live on

  46. وباعَ ما في زندها من سوار

    وكل ما في بيتها من رياش

    Sold every bracelet she owned

    And all the furnishings of her home

  47. وليلة اعوز هند الطعام

    لطفلها الباكي وعز المجير

    On a night when India could not find

    Food for her crying child, could not seek help from a neighbor

  48. يا رب ليس الذنب ذنب الغلام

    يا رب لطفاً بالبريء الصغير

    Dear God, the boy is not to blame for this sin

    Dear God, have mercy on the innocent babe

  49. وبعد وهن الليل وافى فريد

    وانسل كالثعبان نحو المنام

    Exhausted, late that night her husband returned

    And crept like a serpent to bed

  50. فاقبلت هندٌ عليه تريد

    عوناً على جوعٍ يميتُ الغلام

    India approached him begging

    Help for a hunger that threatened the boy's life

  51. فاقفل الباب من الداخل

    وضنَّ حتى يقيح الكلام

    He bolted the door from inside

    Hoarding his words despite her pain

  52. واسترجعت في وجدها الشاعل

    الى وليد جائع لا ينام

    India's burning heart recalled

    Her starving child who could not sleep

  53. كذا قضت ليلتها ساهره

    حتى إذا ما افتر ثغر الصباح

    She spent the night awake

    Until dawn softened the sky's mouth

  54. قامت إلى جيرانها سائره

    تطلب قوت الطفل من ذي سماح

    Then went to her neighbor

    Seeking food for the child out of kindness

  55. وهرولت بالقوت نحو الوحيد

    ودمع عينيها برش الطريق

    She hurried with the food to her only one

    Tears wet the road her eyes traced

  56. وبعد أن غذته نام الوليد

    والوالد الظالم لا يستفيق

    Once fed, the boy slept

    While his cruel father did not stir

  57. واذ مرأت عند انتصاف النهار

    أن فريداً مغرق في السيكون

    When at midday she saw

    That Farid was drowned in drunkenness

  58. قامت وفي المهجة نار وتارة

    تقزع بالكفين باب الخوؤن

    She rose in anger, hands clenched

    Beating the door of his chamber

  59. فلم يجاوبها على رغم ما

    نادت فخافت غير ما ينتظر

    He did not answer her calls

    Fearing the unexpected tragedy

  60. واستنجدت جيران ذاك الحمى

    فبادروا يستطلعون الخبر

    She cried for help from those neighbors

    Quickly coming to investigate

  61. وكسروا الباب فلاح الشباب

    على بساط جثة هامده

    They broke down the door, revealing

    The youth's body prone on the carpet

  62. ودونه سم نقاع مذاب

    كفته منه جرعه واحده

    Before him a melted lethal poison

    A sip of which had killed him

  63. يا لهف عند عند ذاك المصاب

    تمزق الخدين فوق الطريح

    What grief then shook India

    Clawing her cheeks over the corpse

  64. ما خلقت هند لغير العذاب

    كأنها افتت بصلب المسيح

    India was not born for any but suffering

    As if she were the very flesh of Christ

  65. وغيبوه في الثرى وانبرى

    لهند في الجيرة بر جليل

    They buried him and good people

    Showed India great kindness

  66. أنزلها في داره اشهرا

    مع طفلها مشمولةً بالجميل

    Sheltering her and her child

    For months in a generous home

  67. واستأذنت عائتها شاكره

    فأممت بيروت مع طفلها

    Thanking her hosts, India

    Left Beirut with her child

  68. تريد تلك الحالة الغابره

    خياطةً تعتاش من شغلها

    Longing for that bygone life

    Of sewing for her sustenance

  69. فادركت بيروت وهن الظلام

    وأضجعت في الخان ذاك الصغير

    She reached Beirut at dusk

    Laying the small boy down to rest in an inn

  70. وآثرت أن لا يراها الأنام

    فأممتني في الدجى تستشير

    Preferring not to be seen by others

    So she confided namelessly in me that night

  71. قالت الا من غرفةٍ خاليه

    في حيكم اسكنها والوحيد

    She asked if in my neighborhood

    An empty room might shelter her and the child

  72. واستعيد العيشة الخاليه

    فعهد فقري كان عهدي السعيد

    Where she could regain that humble life

    For poverty had been her happy fortune

  73. فرحت استضرعُ للتاعسه

    جماعةً من غاثة المعوذين

    I was delighted to beseech

    Charitable groups on behalf of the sufferer

  74. فخففوا من كربة البائسه

    ومال للسلوى الفؤادُ الحزين

    Lightening the burden of the miserable one

    Whose saddened heart found solace

  75. وعادت الخياطة الفاضله

    لعيشها الماضي وصين العفاف

    The virtuous seamstress

    Returned to her past livelihood and chastity

  76. واستنضرت وردتها الذابلة

    لما سقاها الغيث بعد الجفاف

    Her withered rose blossomed anew

    Watered by the rain after drought's dryness

  77. يا أيها الآباء لا تحفلوا

    بالمال إذ يأتيكم الخاطب

    Oh fathers, when a suitor calls

    Do not consider only money

  78. قولوا له ان جاءكم يسأل

    ندرس أخلاقك يا صاحب

    Say to him who comes asking

    We judge your character, sir

  79. ويا ذوي الأموال لا تقبضوا

    راحاتكم عن بائس يستعين

    Oh wealthy men, do not clench

    Your fists against the needy who ask your help

  80. فدرهم الاحسان مستقرضٌ

    وخالقُ الدنيا هو المستدين

    The coin of charity is a loan

    And the Creator of this world the borrower
