Oh Thurayya, if you go early one day to the garden,
And find no birds there,
And find the land desolate and forlorn,
The flowers withered and scattered,
And see the dew melting away in the heat,
And the dawn turning to dusk,
Know that amidst the grief of the valley,
The flowers, Oh Thurayya, are foretelling
Oh Thurayya, yesterday came a wealthy man,
To your parents, with a large dowry,
And I saw him alone with your father,
Leaving happily and content,
Surely that deceitful suitor has kept me from you,
A suitor offering plentiful wealth,
So remember, in your comfort, this meaning,
And remember, in your singing, this poor man.
