For you two to mix the wine with water is cause for reproach.
Leave it just as the grapevines brought it forth.
Press on, then, and do not fear my intoxication;
for another, who misbehaves under its spell, is the one to blame.
For wine gladdens my high spirits,
and under its spell my drinking-companion approves my ways.
My two companions, the cloak of deep night has fallen;
the air is sweet, the breeze grown gentle.
So if neither of you will help bring me joy,
I myself will undertake to gladden my soul.
For the delegation of joy has now arrived in Bulaq,
and bliss is sweet for us upon its heights.
