أرى أناساً ساء بي ظنُّهُم

في كلّ ما قلتُ من الشعِر

I see people who have ill thoughts of me

In all the poetry I have recited

لمّا تطأطا بهمُ عِلْمُهُمْ

قاسُوا بأقدارهِمُ قدري

When their knowledge stumbled over them

They judged me by their own worth

قالوا سواه صانعٌ كلَّ ما

يأتي به في السرّ والجهرِ

They said, "Another is the maker of all

That comes in secret and openly"

لو فهِموا أو عقلوا لاستحَوْا

أن يجعلوا المِرِّيخَ كالبدر

If they understood or reasoned

They would be ashamed to make Mars like the moon

قِيسوا بشعري شعرَه تعلموا

تضايُقَ النهر عن البحر

The river is too narrow for the sea

من بَطَّل الحقّ هجا نفسه

بجهله من حيث لا يدري

Whoever negates the truth has blamed himself

In his ignorance, without knowing

فناظروني فيه أو فاشرحوا

شعريَ إن أنكرتمُ أمري

So look at me in it or explain my

Poetry if you deny my affair

أولا فقولوا حسدٌ قاتل

مستمِكنٌ في القلب والصدر

First say, "Deadly envy

Resides in the heart and chest"
