Many a night I lit with gleaming smiles,
and many a morning blotted out with tresses;
and from a watchman I concealed myself,
lest he see me nestled in the shelter of bosoms.
Through the night, my fortress against him was an arm and breast,
and my shield, necklaces of camphor.
I pluck lightning from the pearly teeth of pale
beauties, and roses set in the disks of full moons,
beneath a night like Joseph’s robe upon
Jacob’s eyelids—or like the glad herald’s words.
