1. قسمة الموت قسمةٌ لا تجور

    كلُّ حيٍّ بكأسها مخمور

    The distribution of death is an equitable distribution

    Each living being gets intoxicated with his share

  2. يستوي كل من تفاوت فيها

    لا أميرٌ يبقى ولا مأمور

    Everyone is equal in it, regardless of any disparity between them

    Neither the prince remains nor the subordinate

  3. نحن في غفلة وللموت فينا

    طالب مدرك مُجِدّ قدير

    We are heedless, while death seeks us

    An insistent seeker, determined and able

  4. نستطيب المنى وهن عواصٍ

    فنطيل الآمال وهي غرور

    We relish wishes, but they are false hopes

    So we prolong hopes, but they are deceptions

  5. فِكره في الحياة وهيْ ضلال

    إنّ في الموت يحسنُ التفكيرُ

    Think of death in life, for it is misguidance

    In death, reflecting is virtuous

  6. ليس ينجو من الغرور سوى مَنْ

    قبرهُ في فؤاده محفور

    None is saved from deceptions except one

    Whose grave is carved into his heart

  7. كدَّر الموتُ صفوَ عيشي وهل في الْ

    أَرْضِ عيشٌ ما شابَهُ تكدير

    Death has troubled the serenity of my life, and is there in the world

    A life not afflicted with such disturbance?

  8. وتذكرتُ بالمصائب قومي

    وجدودي إني لقومي ذَكُور

    I remembered the calamities of my people

    And my ancestors, I am the most mindful of my people

  9. أَيْنَ قومي الأُلَى الذين بهمْ كا

    ن يموت الخنا ويحيا الفقير

    Where are my eminent people, by whom

    The spiteful would die, and the poor would live

  10. لو حَمَى معشراً من القوم حامٍ

    لحمتْ قوميَ العُلاَ والخِيرُ

    Had a group of people been protected by a protector

    My people would have possessed honor and goodness

  11. أين آبائي الذين تفانَوْا

    وبهمْ كانت الليالي تُنِير

    Where are my fathers who sacrificed themselves

    And by them the nights were illuminated

  12. أين جدّي حسينٌ بن عليّ

    أين زيدُ المفجَّع الموتور

    Where is my grandfather Hussein son of Ali

    Where is Zaid the aggrieved, the wounded?

  13. أين مهِدِيُّنا المملَّكُ والقا

    ئمُ أين المعزّ والمنصور

    Where is our king al-Mahdi the rightly guided

    Where is al-Muizz and al-Mansur?

  14. أين تلك الحلوم والفضل والأَلْ

    باب بل أين ذلك التدبير

    Where are those virtues, merits and minds

    Rather, where is that wisdom?

  15. أين ذاك السلطانُ والملكُ والمَنْ

    عةُ والبطشُ والعلا والظهور

    Where is that sultan, king, favor

    Oppression, might, prominence and manifestation?

  16. أين تلك الجيوشُ والعزةُ القَعْ

    ساءُ والجمعُ والعديدُ الكثير

    Where are those armies, pride

    Hordes, masses and large numbers?

  17. فرّقتهمْ يَدُ المنون فبادُوا

    وَحوَتْهُمْ بعد القصور القبورُ

    The hand of death scattered them, so they perished

    And after palaces, graves enclosed them

  18. سَلَفٌ صالح وأملاكُ صِدقٍ

    بهمُ تستوي وتُلْوَي الأمور

    A righteous predecessor and possession of truth

    By them, affairs are set right and straightened

  19. ثم عِشنا ثلاثةً بفم الحا

    سد من عيشنا الثَرَى والصخور

    Then we lived, sustained by the mouth of envy

    Our life from dust and rocks

  20. فعمَرْنا بذاك مدَّة دهرٍ

    كلُّنا ظاهرُ الرضا مسرور

    So we lived for an age

    All of us appearing content and delighted

  21. لم يعِش للمعزّ نَسْلٌ سِوانا

    كلُّ ميْتٍ بنجله مذكور

    No offspring of al-Muizz has lived except us

    Every deceased one is remembered for his son

  22. فأصابت يدُ المنون عَقِيلاً

    وهو مثلُ القضيب غَضّ نضِير

    Then the hand of death afflicted Aqeel

    While he was like a fresh tender twig

  23. حين هزّ الشبابُ أعطافَه الغِي

    دَ وحين استوى له التعمير

    When youth shook its shoulders

    And the time of his flourishing arrived

  24. لم يجاوِز حَدَّ الثلاثين إلا

    بليالٍ ليست لها تكثِير

    He barely surpassed thirty years

    Except by a few nights not worth counting

  25. أين تلك البشاشةُ الغضَّةُ الطلْ

    قةُ والنظَرُ البهِيُّ المنير

    Where is that radiant, bright

    Openness, and shining, illuminating sight?

  26. أين ذاك الطبعُ السليمُ وذاك ال

    خُلُقُ العذْبُ والسَّنَا والنور

    Where is that sound nature, that gentle

    Disposition, sweetness, brilliance and light?

  27. أين ذاك البِشرُ الذي كان يبدو

    مِنْ سَناه للناظرين البشير

    Where is that good omen that appeared

    From his brilliance, heralding good news to onlookers?

  28. كان عفَّ الضمير عذبَ السجايا

    ليس في سرّ أمره تعسير

    He was of pure conscience, of sweet temperament

    In his secret affair there was no difficulty

  29. صادقَ الودّ وارِيَ الزَنْد لا يَعْ

    دُوهُ في كلّ حالةٍ تطهير

    Loyal in friendship, gentle in demeanor

    Never transgressing in any situation or purification

  30. صار من بعد ذلك الأُنسِ وَحْشاً

    وهُوَ في قعر حفرةٍ مهجور

    After that intimacy, he became desolate

    While he is at the bottom of an abandoned pit

  31. آهِ من لوعة لها في سواد الْ

    عينِ دمعٌ وفي الفؤاد زفير

    Oh! The agony that has in the blackness of the eye

    A tear, and in the heart a sigh

  32. كيف يبقَى امرؤ توَلَّى أبوه

    وأخوه فحبْلهُ مبتور

    How can a man remain when his father and brother are gone

    For his rope has been severed?

  33. بأن أَصل وجُدَّ فرعيَ واللّ

    هُ عليم بما تُجِنّ الصدور

    That I unite and my lineage and branch endure

    And Allah knows what hearts conceal

  34. فسأبكيك يا عَقِيل بقَلْبٍ

    فيه من حزنه عليك سعير

    So I will cry for you O Aqeel with a heart

    In which there is a blazing fire of grief over you

  35. كنتُ قِدماً أظنّ أنّي جَلِيد

    ليس يَلِوي عزيمتي المحذور

    I used to think I was resistant

    And no misfortune could bend my resolve

  36. فأراني مما بلا الصبر عيًّا

    أيُّ قلبٍ على الخطوب صبور

    Yet I find myself, due to lack of patience, incapacitated

    What heart is patient with misfortunes?
