قد ظلموا إذ نسبوا ثغرَهُ

في حسنه للدّرّ أو للبَرَدْ

They wronged him when they attributed his mouth

To a pearl or ice out of his handsomeness

ولم يَصُغْه الله إلا لكَيْ

يقدحَ في الأكباد نارَ الكَمَدْ

And God did not make him attentive but so

He may kindle fire in the livers from repression

وابِأبِي من لان مَسّاً ومَن

لو عقدوه لانثنى وانعقدْ

And my father disavowed he who was not supple and he who

If tied would have bent and got tied

يسمح بالوعد ولكنّه

لا يَصْدُق الوعد إذا ما وعدْ

He permits the promise but he

Does not fulfill the promise if he promises

هذا ولا يُحْقِدُني فعله

وأحمقُ العُشاق مَنْ قد حَقَد

This without his act making me resentful

And the foolish lovers are those who resent
