1. إني غريمٌ والغريمُ مطالِبٌ

    كان المُداينُ موسِراً أو معسِرا

    I am a debtor, and the debtor is bound,

    Whether the creditor was once rich or poor.

  2. يا سيِّدي أدعوك دعوَةَ مُذْكِرٍ

    مِن وعده ما خاف ألا يذكرا

    O my lord, I call you with a reminder's plea,

    Never did he fear to be forgotten.

  3. شِعْر كأنّ جميع ألباب الورى

    جُمِعتْ عليه فقصرنا أن يُشْهَرا

    Poetry whose eloquence seems as if

    All the doors of intellect were assembled upon it, yet we fell short in making it famous.

  4. لفظ كأنّ الغانياتِ لفَظْنه

    فنظمن منه في القلائد جوهرا

    A diction whose articulation is as if

    The singing girls composed strands of pearls from it.

  5. هو أوّلٌ في حسنه وكمالِه

    وارى جميعَ الشعر بعدك آخِرا

    It is unmatched in its elegance and perfection,

    And I see all other poetry after you as inferior.

  6. كتباين الليلين ليلٍ مظلمٍ

    وَحْشٍ وليلٍ قد أتانا مقمِرا

    As the difference between two nights, a dark night

    Of solitude, and a night brightened by the rising moon.

  7. هو روضة أُنُفٌ تفيدك أخضرا

    طَوْراً وطَوْراً أحمرا أو أصفرا

    It is a garden whose flowers provide you with green,

    At times red or yellow.

  8. ومودّة مثل الأماني لذّةً

    لو أدركتْ بالشمّ كانت عنبرا

    And affection whose bliss, if attained

    Through perception, would be ambergris.

  9. أوليتها ندّاً وعوداً مثل ما

    حُزْتَ الفضائلَ منظراً أو مخبرا

    I wished it generosity and promises like what

    You have reaped of merits, sights or reports.

  10. وكذاك من يَكُن العزيزُ أَخاً له

    يَأْوِي إلى جبلٍ مِنيع أوعرا

    And likewise, he who has the dear one as a brother

    Seeks refuge on a lofty, rugged mountain.

  11. صلّى عليه الله ما امتدّ الدجى

    ورأت عيونُ الناس صبحاً أنورا

    May God send blessings upon him as long as the darkness stretches

    And the eyes of people see the dawn illuminated.

  12. لا تَنْسَ ما أسلفته إني امرؤٌ

    وَقْفٌ على شُكْرِيكَ حتى المحشرا

    Do not forget what I owe you, I am a man

    Who stands steadfast upon repaying your favors until the day of resurrection.

  13. إني أخافُ إذا تركتَ تَغاضياً

    عاداتِ مثلِكَ أن أكون مقصرا

    I fear that if you neglect heedfulness

    Of your like’s customs, I would be remiss.
