1. جاريةٌ مرهفةُ القدِّ

    ظالمةٌ مظلومةُ الخَدِّ

    A delicate, refined damsel

    Whose cheek is darkened yet wronged

  2. كالقمر الطالع لكنّها

    في حسنها كالرَّشأ الفَرْد

    Like the rising moon, but in her beauty

    She's like a solitary, precious pearl

  3. في ليلها البدرُ وفي دِعْصها

    غصنٌ به رُمَّانَتا نهد

    The full moon is her night, and in her braids

    A branch with two ripe pomegranates for breasts

  4. تَبْسم عن بَرْق وعن لؤلؤ

    مُنَظَّم أحلى من الشَّهد

    A smile flashes like lightning, like pearls

    Arranged sweeter than honey

  5. بتنا معاً تحت ظلال الدّجى

    من مَفْرَش الوَرْد على مهد

    We slept together beneath the shadows of night

    On a bed of flowers and pillows

  6. أَجْنِي ثمارَ الخمر من مَضْحك

    شفاهُه من ورق الوردِ

    I plucked the fruits of wine from her laughing mouth

    From lips like rose petals

  7. كأنّني ليثُ وغىً خادِرٌ

    مَعْ شادن أحورَ في بُرْد

    As if I were a mighty lion and she

    A gentle gazelle in the cold

  8. تُكتُمني ما عندها من جوىً

    منّي كما أكتمُ ما عندي

    She keeps her passions from me

    As I conceal mine from her

  9. تُخْفِي وتُبدي بيّ وجداً كما

    أُخفِي من الحبّ وما أُبدي

    She hides and reveals her love for me

    As I hide and reveal my love

  10. أَصُدّ عنها ظالماً كلَّما

    زادتْ من الوصل على الصَّدّ

    If she draws nearer, I grow colder

    Increasing my aloofness from her affection

  11. لا نِدَّ في الحسن لها مثل ما

    أّنّيّ في الحبِّ بلا نِدّ

    In beauty, none can match her

    As in love, none can match me

  12. لا زالت الجيزة معمورة

    بكل مخطوف الحشا نهد

    Still inhabited is Al-Jizah

    By every gazelle with delicate breast

  13. إني ألذُّ العيشُ فيها بما

    أولى عزيز الدين من رِفد

    How sweet is life there with one

    Who bestowed honor upon the noble religion

  14. المجد بسّامٌ إلى ماجدٍ

    أروعَ بسّامٍ إلى المجد

    Glory is a sword to the glorious

    A most wondrous sword to glory

  15. كأنما راحتُه مُزْنَة

    تبْدا بلا بَرْق ولا رعد

    As if his tranquility were a balance

    Flashing without lightning or thunder

  16. كأنّما في الحزم آراؤه

    مشتقّة من قُضُب الهند

    As if his sound judgements

    Were drawn from Indian steel

  17. المُلكْ ذو عِقْد ولكنَّه

    في عصره واسطةُ العِقْد

    The king is bound by covenant

    Yet in his time, he binds covenants

  18. ما السيف أمضى منه في عزمه

    في غِمده إذ سُلَّ من غِمد

    No sword is keener than his resolve

    When drawn from the sheath of resolve

  19. يا أيها البدر الذي جَدّه

    محمدٌ أُكْرِمَ من جَدّ

    O moon whose ancestor was

    Muhammad, most honored of ancestors

  20. قصّرتُ في مدحك لكنّني

    أُواصِل المدح كما أُبدِي

    I've fallen short in praising you

    Yet I persist in praise as I'm able

  21. فإن تُسامِحْني فيا نعمة

    يَقْصُر عن حمدي لها جَهْدي

    If you'll forgive me, what bounty!

    My efforts fall short of praising it
