1. أيّها الفاضل الّذي فَضَل العا

    لَمَ في فهمه فليس يرامُ

    O virtuous one who excels the eminent in understanding

    None aspires to comprehend him, he is unmatched

  2. أنت في الفضل والمكارم سَبّا

    قٌ وفي القول شاعرٌ مِقدام

    You are foremost in merit and generosity, preceding

    All others in discourse, an intrepid poet

  3. وصل النثُر مِن كلامك بالسِّح

    ر عنه ووافَى بالمعجز الاِنتظام

    Your prose attains the miracles of rhythm and composition

    Surpassing it, embodied in marvelous harmony

  4. فقضينا فيه ذِمامَك إذ لي

    س لخَلق سواك عندي ذمام

    Thus I dispelled your bridle, for none but you

    In my eyes, deserves a bridle

  5. وتورّدتُ منكَ بحراً نبتْ عن

    نيلِ تيّار فضلهِ الأوهامُ

    And I attained from you an ocean that sprang from

    The overwhelming currents of its imagination

  6. من معانٍ كأنّهنّ الغواني

    تحت لفظٍ كأنّه بسّامُ

    With meanings like melodies beneath words

    That resemble unsheathed swords

  7. تَرجَمَ الّلفظُ عن سَناه كما تَر

    جَم عن واضح النهار الظلامُ

    The words translate their gleam as the darkness

    Translates the radiance of broad daylight

  8. عجباً إنه يقوم مقام الرْ

    راح في الارتياح وهو كلام

    Strangely, it takes the place of cool comfort

    Though it is but speech

  9. ليت شعري أعاره الروض حَليْا

    أم كستْه سعودَها الأيّام

    I wonder, did the garden lend it ornament

    Or did the days dress it in felicity

  10. أم غدا مَذهبُ التَّناسُخ حقّاً

    فرمى فيك روحَه النَّظَّام

    Or did the doctrine of transmigration become truth

    And the soul of An-Nazzam transmigrated into you

  11. أم تناولت للبلاغة بعدي

    خطّةً نام عنك فيها الأنام

    Or did you take after my rhetoric

    While people slept, in a unique manner

  12. إن يكن للوفاء والفضل والفه

    م حُسامٌ فأنت ذاك الحسام

    If merit, generosity and understanding possess

    A sword, then you are that sword
