Intoxication in the intoxicated is dignified in my view
So cast off inhibitions and indulge in revelry
And heed not the blamer in your rapture
For accepting blame in drunkenness is shameful
It robs the youth of his senses
And his wisdom in gentle moderation
Ruby red in the goblet, if it glows
The clink of water in it yellows
In a goblet I have, resembling
Only the limpid water and light of day
As if the pourer, when he fills it
Mixes together ice and fire
So delight in the slain by pleasure, if you are one
Who is familiar with it, and leave off chastity
Do you not see the Nile and the morning breeze
Braiding small emeralds in it
Especially if the flute trills
Or the silent-bangled hands you the cup
And you spend the night plucking ripe fruit
Sweetly dark, and cooled by the dew
And a fruitful palm, deadly in its swoon
And a jujube tree, heavy with fruit
As if the mole on her cheek in her beauty
Is a night that shows its wing in daylight
Whoever is not entertained by this and that
Is, by God, an ass through and through
