وَبِهِم بَدا نَسطُورُ أَوَّلَ سامِعٍ
قال اسمَعُوا صَحبِ حِدسي ما نَبا
And of them all, Nestor was the first to hear.
He said, “Listen, friends—my intuition has not failed:
قد دَبَّ في أُذُني وَقلبي مُنبِئي
خَبَبٌ بِكَبكَبَةِ الجِيادِ مُدَبدِبا
Something has crept into my ear, and my heart is my informant—
a trotting beat, resounding with the steeds’ rolling clatter.
فَعَسى ذِيُومِيذٌ وأُوذِسُ أَقبَلا
وَمِنَ العِدى خَيرَ الجِيادِ مُدَبدِبا
Perhaps Diomedes and Odysseus are returning,
driving from the foe the finest steeds, their hoofbeats rumbling.”
