He said: Listen, Hector, for my mind's eye
forebodes that I should prepare myself,
and go to the fleet, spying out
their movements, watching, waiting.
So lift your staff, and swear to me
that you will reward me if I determine,
with the horses of Achilles and his chariot
that holds his stubborn steel armor.
Then I'll penetrate into the heart of the fray
leading the reins, and reach the ships
where kings by Agamemnon have
seen only flight or ambush preferable.
Little did you know me, foolish Deiphobus
to think that I would fail you.
With both hands Hector lifted his staff, swearing
to be my willing witness.
No others shall mount the horses of Achilles
I will justly win them for myself.
