When he had finished, all the gathering roared with fervor—
a thunderous din, like the sea’s tumult battering the cliff,
like Notus when, from every quarter, gust on gust,
he flings the waves against the highest rocky ridge.
They scattered, hurrying away to their tents;
there they kindled fires and did not linger.
They took their food and, as of old, made pure offerings
to their gods—each to the one he was accustomed to honor.
They asked them to ward off calamity; and from among them
Atrides went to win the favor of Zeus.
He sacrificed a four-year-old bull, after inviting
the noble leaders of the night march to his feast; they assembled.
First among them was Nestor, then Idomeneus,
and Ajax, Ajax—they had lagged a little.
Diomedes followed, then Odysseus, who
was renowned for wisdom from the Lord of the immortals.
Menelaus the champion came without invitation,
knowing the anguish of spirit that afflicted his brother.
They stood around the bull, then scattered their barley,
and among them Agamemnon prayed and cried aloud.
