If you had waited, though the battle raged,

And streams of blood in torrents flowed,

And watched Ithidius' son, you could not tell

Which of the armies dealt more blows.

In frenzy rushing on the foe

He ravaged the plain 'twixt Aad and Gaad,

As narrow inlets by the floods are swept -

The mighty bridges burst in fragments sharp.

The dams are burst, the foam sweeps on,

The huts of peasants whirl in air.

Their hopes are dead 'neath clouds that spread

Dense darkness, charged with rain drops, everywhere.

Though closed in ranks the legions stand,

His onset makes their order break,

They fly, as wolves that shun the Sun

And seek the clefts when dawn begins to break.

Thus 'gainst the foe did Diomed rage -

Like mountain lion on the plain

That shepherds pierce with darts, but flees not.

Though wounded, it still slays again.

The frightened shepherd boy takes flight

    Seeking the homestead's sure retreat,

While timid ewes that take to flight,

Are chased and seized as by the fleet.

So Diomed chased and slew at will,

None could his onset fierce withstand.

Take then the horses' reins, and drive

My chariot to the centre of our band.

To fighting I'm inclined, take you

Whatever part you will, the choice is free.

Anchises said: 'Tis meet for me

The steeds to rein when you so order me.

Lest plunged amidst the crowd and din of war

They bolt in panic and defeat incur.

Then comes the foe with falchion keen

To slay both man and steed, I ween.

Better 'twould be if you lead the van,

With lances I can thrust from far,

Then turn and deal yet deadlier blows

When once the battle joins amain.

Choose as you will, you shall ordain.

To which I said: At home the horses pine

For lack of forage 'neath the siege they pine.

On foot I came to lead the hosts this day,

With trusty bow have cleft my way.

Full many a neck and rider brave

Lies low this morn their ranks I clave.

Yet lest the gods take mortal life,

No offerings made we to appease their strife.

A deity's wrath is worst of ills.

Said he, wise counsellor in war's skills:

'Twas apt advice in truth, and yet

    Yon warrior I cannot forget,

Perchance he is Diomed the brave,

Though mist from sight his form doth shroud,

Gods from each side protect him safe

And turn the blows that on him crowd,

My shaft had drunk his life blood up

When through his shoulder joint it sped,

I thought him gone to Pluto's gloom,

But now his courage waxes dread.

Alas! Where are my steeds? Where fled

My spirit's pride and glory's meed?

    Eleven cars upon the plain

    With curtains closely drawn remain,

Two chargers harnessed to each car

That crushed their oats and winnowed barley far,

I heeded not my father's best advice

When I set out upon this enterprise.

Then get you to the bowmen's van, said he,

And 'gainst the foe thy chariots lead,

'Tis apt advice he gave, I see,

But still these doubts my mind impede.

My horses, I replied, are left behind

In my own land, where forage hard to find,

So have I come on foot, intent to face

The foe, my trusty bow my sole embrace.

The warrior prince I shot, though thence he fled,

And Diomed by my shaft too was sped.

The blood from both ran down in streams and yet

In both the fury of the fight was whet.

111 fate dogs me since I took In hand

This bow, and they confronted me did stand.

For Ilium's sake I led my troops this day

Resolved to plunge into the bloody fray.

Should I unscathed return unto my wife

And home with lofty walls and roofs for life

No foeman can, if this report he's heard

Cut short my thread when once I've given the word.

This bow I'll splinter, to the fire fling,

Useless its service, worthless aught can bring.

He said: "Now stay! To meet him let us go

With steeds, his coming we'll forestall.

My horses can surpass the gale

That swift before its roaring currents quails."

Take you the whip, the coursers guide,

While I with falchion combat dare decide.

If fight you will, I'll take the steed

To speed us from or through the conflict dread.

Anchises said: 'Twere best for me

To rein the steeds, since more skilled am I.

They will not heed or pace for me

If once we're turned to craven flight they fly.

Headlong they'll bolt amidst the crowd

As Diomed plies his falchion good.

He'll slay both man and steed. So I

More fit than you their pace to try.

You thrust with lance and spear close set.

Then turn again with force renewed.

As you appoint, so let it be,

All choice to you is given free.

    Diomed, Aenelaus thus bespoke:

Against us two, beware the fatal stroke.

Death's dark defeat, turn from the van,

Tempt not the chances of the battle's ban.

Speak not to me of flight, my soul

Knows naught of turning from its goal.

Ne'er have my race from war's wild Hour

To flee in panic turned their power.

My purpose naught can turn or bend,

Though fates against me portents send.

Lo! From the battle car alight

On foot I come to plunge into the fight.

    Athena I deny the right

To flee before the foeman's might.

Both shall fall beneath my strokes,

If one escapes red death's fell yokes.

Slay them I must, though with their life

For this dread feat Athena is at strife.

At once unharness every steed we own

And swiftly drive them from the battle zone.

Hence! Be your coursers' pace controlled

By my brave squires Anchises bold.

The noblest of their race and breed

Begot by mares to Zephyr freed.

    To King Eumedes given first,

From him as precious prize dispersed.

Anchises sought to steal this strain

And lodged them safe in far off glen.

Of six he reared, one pair retained,

And one to thee as gift obtained.

See! On the plains they course amain.

Ah! Would that I bestride again!

    ISTENELAUS

My friend, he comes! The fiery pair

Now roused to fury, seek you here.

Brave chiefs - Anchises' noble heir

And Aeantes the renowned in war.

Beware the stroke of death, nor dare

Assume the place that leaders share.

    The infantry's slow measured pace

Can best elude his swift embrace.

Reply not thus! For I'll not yield

To thought or deed dishonor mean.

Ne'er have my race deserted field

    Or shunned the warrior's mien.

My purpose naught can turn or bend,

Though fates against me portents send.

Lo! From the battle car alight

On foot I come to plunge into the fight.

    Athena I deny the right

To flee before the foeman's might.

Both shall fall beneath my strokes,

If one escapes red death's fell yokes.

Slay them I must, though with their life

For this dread feat Athena is at strife.

At once unharness every steed we own

And swiftly drive them from the battle zone.

Hence! Be your coursers' pace controlled

By my brave squires Anchises bold.

The noblest of their race and breed

Begot by mares to Zephyr freed.

    To King Eumedes given first,

From him as precious prize dispersed.

Anchises sought to steal this strain

And lodged them safe in far off glen.

Of six he reared, one pair retained,

And one to thee as gift obtained.

See! On the plains they course amain.

Ah! Would that I bestride again!
