1. تخلقت الطرواد لما الدجى أربدا

    مغيراً وحلوا من عجالهم الجردا

    When night fell cold, the Trojans took up arms,

    Changing, though wearied from their constant march.

  2. وفوقاً قبيل الزاد حشداً تألقوا

    ولم يجلسوا زعباً وإن ثقلوا جهدا

    Before their tents they gathered, armor shining bright,

    Not sitting idly, though their limbs were taxed and tired.

  3. لقد هالهم أن ابن فيلا بدا لهم

    وبعد اعتزال الحرب قد عاد مشتدا

    Seeing Achilles' son take up the fight

    Dismayed them - he returned with fury fired

  4. بهم فولداماس الحكيم ابن فنش

    تبدى خطيباً يفقه الحل والعقدا

    To meet them. Wise Polydamas, Panthous' son

    Stepped forth to speak, discerning the path to shun.

  5. نظورٌ لما يأتي خبيرٌ بما مضى

    وليٌّ لهكطور ومن رهطه عدا

    With knowledge of past deeds and insight keen

    A lord to Hektor's kin, though not their head.

  6. لقد ولدا في ليلةٍ بيد أنه

    بدا دونه بأساً كما فاقه رشدا

    That night a hero rose, though yet unseen -

    In wisdom soon he far outstripped his breed.

  7. فقال أصيحابي اقتفن نصيحتي

    هلموا إلى إليون ذا الحين نرتدا

    "My friends," he said, "heed now my grave advice -

    Retreat at once to Ilios' walls apace.

  8. لدى الفلك في ذا السهل للفجر لا أرى

    مقاماً وعنا السور تدون قد ندا

    No place of rest I see - their ranks encase

    Our walls. More easy far Argos to take

  9. لقد كانت الأرغوس أسهل مأخذاً

    وآخيل مشتد بعزلته حقدا

    Than Ajax and his bitter lingering hate.

    How Lilybaea's shore my heart did ache

  10. وكم شاقني إذ ذاك ليلي بقربها

    على أمل بالقرب أن نبلغ القصدا

    When by her side - though together, apart.

    But well I know his fury will not slake

  11. ولكنني أخشى وأدري بأنه

    بحدته لن يرضين هنا الحدا

    Through our ranks he will tear, and in his rage

    Seize our high walls, our people, kin and cage.

  12. يجوز مرامي الجحفلين مغادراً

    ليمتلك الأسوار والأهل والولدا

    True counsel this - then let us slip away

    While clothed is yet the sky in blackest night.

  13. صدقتكم نصحاً فسيروا بنا فإن

    يكف فذاك الليل في وجهه اسودا

    But if dawn breaks, and he takes up the fray

    A matchless warrior you will know the knight.

  14. ولكن إذا ما أصبح الصبح وانبرى

    بعدته أيقنتموه الفتى الفردا

    Safe in Ilios let joyed soldiers hail

    He who from ruin snatches, will prevail.

  15. لإليون من ولى فمستبشراً نجا

    ويشبع طيرا الجو والغضف من يردى

    When this news filled my ears, though it appalled,

    My knowledge says - e'en if it irks you sore -

  16. فلا طرقت هذي النوازل مسمعي

    ولكن علمي ذا وإن ساءكم جدا

    Gather your forces, make defense in all

    Ilios' towers, prepare for blood and gore.

  17. إذاً فلنقم في الليل حشداً مكثفاً

    بإليون أسباب الوقاية نعتدا

    Our northern flank, southeastern corner man

    With troops - our envoys steadily began.

  18. فأبراجها الشما وأرتاجها التي

    بأصفاقها زلجن نجلي بها الوفدا

    As morning glows, our full array stands tall

    Atop our fortress, forces unified.

  19. وعند بزوغ الفجر بالعدد الأولى

    تألقن نبدو فوق معقلنا حشدا

    In vain shall Ajax, strive though he may, call

    To breach our walls, however hard he tried.

  20. فهيهات آخيلٌ يفوز إذا بدا

    بممتنع الأسوار مهما علا جهدا

    His weary horses shall in terror flee

    Back to his ships, if the day grants them free.

  21. يعود إذا ما أجهد الخيل حولها

    مغاراً إلى أسطوله لاهباً وجدا

    The dogs shall rend them, ere the day is done,

    Or work upon them all their will and lust.

  22. ستفرسه غضف الكلاب قبيل أن

    يحل بهن اليوم أو يعمل الحدا

    At Ajax, Hektor yelled, our battle won

    Thanks to your wisdom Polydamas, we must

  23. فأحدق شزراً فيه هكطور صارخاً

    لقد جئت أمراً فولداماسنا إدا

    Attend the camp - disband not, hold the line

    Let each watch close, the time and place assign.

  24. لقد ملأ الأسماع ما أرضنا حوت

    نضاراً بهيا أو نحاساً بها صلدا

    Whoso fears for his gold, arise, combine

    And gather it here, to feed the men we trust.

  25. وقد نفدت جلى الكنوز وبددت

    فلست لها تلقى بأنفائها عهدا

    Better to spend it all, than let it shine

    In our foes' hands, whose hate is quite unjust.

  26. بإفريجيا بيعت وأرض ميونةٍ

    على حين عنا زفس منتقما صدا

    If morning lights our battle lines with fire

    Before the plain, in square formation dire

  27. وها هو عني الآن راضٍ منيلني

    من النصر ما للفلك يطردهم طردا

    Should Ajax come unto the field of blood

    A wondrous sight, ere blows begin to fly -

    I will go forth and meet him where I stood

    For every hero is in battle bred

    And many a champion stays the foe's dread tread.

  30. ومن بات في خوفٍ على المال فليقم

    ويجمع لديه المال يطعمه الجندا

    In shouts of folly Troy did greet his speech

    Not knowing Athena herself led their path astray.

  31. فخيرٌ لنا نلهو به جملةً ولا

    نمتع بالأموال أعداءنا اللدا

    But Hektor left, their wisdom out of reach,

    Thanks to Polydamas, they went their way.

  32. وإن طر وجه الصبح دجج جيشنا

    فتعقد دون الفلك كرته العقدا

    In orderly array the whole night long

    Between those lines no soldier broke the throng.

  33. فإن كر آخيلٌ إلى ساحة الوغى

    رأى عجباً من قبل أن يرد الوردا

    Meanwhile, the Greek men mourned amid their grief

    For great Patroclus, brooding on his doom.

  34. أبارزه لاهالعاً أو مولياً

    ولا بد منا ماجدٌ يحرز المجدا

    Among them, moaned Akhilleus for his chief

    Lying, a giant in eternal gloom.

  35. لكل همام كانت الحرب منهلا

    فكم بطلٍ فيها يصد العدى أصدى

    His hands on his fallen comrade's chest he laid

    Like a great lion, roaring at the blade.

  36. فضجت له الطرواد جهلاً وما دروا

    بأن أثينا قد أضلتهم عمدا

    As if among the mountain cubs alone

    The lion returns, maddened for the kill.

  37. وهكطور طرّاً وافقوا يغفلون ما

    لهم فولداماسٌ بحكمته أبدى

    On the trail he springs with pitilessly hone

    To ravage them with indefatigable will.

  38. وما لوا وما زالوا بملء انتظامهم

    لزادٍ لهم ما بين تلك السرى مدا

    "Alas!" he cried. "Menoitius' pride misplaced!

    I pledged when you left - my promise goes disgraced.

  39. وأما بنوا الإغريق آناء ليلهم

    فقد لبثوا في مأتمٍ هدهم هدا

    At home I told your father when the tide

    Has turned, and Hector conquered, I would bring

  40. وبينهم أخيل في زفراتهم

    يحن لفطرقل وقد أكبر الفقدا

    Your body back, and raze Ilios' side.

    But vainly now, since Zeus let Hector sting.

  41. على صدرٍ ذاك الإلف ألقى أكفه

    يحاكي إذا ما أحدق الأسد الوردا

    By Hector's hands, the fates decree that I

    And all my Myrmidons are doomed to die.

  42. كأن ببطن الغاب أشباله بها

    خلا قانصٌ فأربد واشتد واحتدا

    Old Phthia's king will not receive me, riven,

    Nor Thetis, my mother, given this vile quell.

  43. وهب على آثاره بحزازةٍ

    تحدره وهداً وتصعده نجدا

    Now you, Patroclus, my closest kin in heaven,

    After you here, I am destined to fell.

  44. فصاح ألا رباه واعظم موعدٍ

    وعدت منتيوساً ولن أصدق الوعدا

    No solace have I, 'til Hector pays the price,

    Your cold murderer - his head shall pay suffice

  45. بمنزله عاهدته لأفنطسٍ

    أعيدُ ابنهُ من بعد أن يقهر الضدا

    And at your pyre it will kindle bright

    As sacrifice, twelve Trojan heads for you.

  46. ويهدم إليوناً ويرجع غانماً

    وهيهات زفسٌ كل آمالنا أسدى

    Those youths of Troy whom we catch in the fight

    My blade will drink their blood, this promise true.

  47. بإليون قد خط القضاء أن من

    دماء كلينا الأرض محمرةً تندى

    'Til I fulfill my oath - my words presume

    Then many a Trojan, Dardan maid shall weep

  48. فلن يتلقاني أبثي الشيخ عائداً

    وثيتس أمي بعد أن أعظما البعدا

    Held captive in our homes, which we will reign

    They will bow above you now, nightlong and deep

  49. أفطرقل مذ سيقت لذا الترب أعظمي

    وبعدك لي قد خط أن أنزل اللحدا

    Beating their chests and necks in ceaseless pain."

    Akettle then was placed upon the flame

  50. فلست متمّاً مأتماً لك قبل أن

    أذيق الردى هكطور قاتلك الجلدا

    To wash the body of the fallen brave.

    With care they cleaned it, reverent in their aim,

  51. وشكته تلقى لديك ورأسه

    فأذكي لك النيران مدخراً حمدا

    Washing away the blood his flesh that gave.

    They anointed him with fragrant, softened oils

  52. ومن حولها اثني عشر رأساً بصارمي

    أقضب من طروادة فتيةٍ مردا

    And rubbed it on his skin to ease his toils.

    On every wound the healers poured in balms

  53. فظل إذاً ملقىً لدى الفلك ريثما

    أبر فذا عهدي ولن أخلف العهدا

    Aged nine years - their curative art showed.

    Lifting him on the deathbed strewn with palms,

  54. فكم ثم طرواديةً دردنيةً

    سبيناً بدارٍ بأسنا فوقها امتدا

    They covered him in a dress of whitest snow.

    They keened for him, while Achilles grieved

  55. ينحن عليك اليوم والليل كله

    ويلطمن بض الصدر والنحر والخدا

    All night, his dear companion heaved.

    To white-armed Hera then spoke Zeus's son:

  56. وأوعز أن يعلى على النار مرجلٌ

    وفي غسل جسم الميت من حينهم يبدا

    "Ha! Now Achilles may be broken inside.

    No doubt the Greeks have made their plan and gone

  57. ولما إلى في ساطع القدر ماؤهم

    ففي غسله جد وقد أحسنوا الجدا

    To you - their guide against me you provide."

    She snapped "Brute! Mock me as you may!

  58. ونقوه من تلك الدماء وبادروا

    لزيتٍ كثيفٍ يدلكون به الجلدا

    But humankind helps humankind today.

    They have not reached our everlasting reign.

  59. وفي كل جرحٍ أفرغوا بلسماً مضى

    لتسعة أعوامٍ تقادمه عهدا

    No immortality like ours they know.

    Though lofty goddess I, to none the same

  60. وألقوه من فوق السرير وأسبلوا

    من الرأس حتى تحت أقدامه بردا

    Except my brother, whose great works I show.

    I did not give the Trojans life in fear

  61. ومن فوقه سترٌ من النسج أبيضٌ

    وناحوا وآخيلٌ مدى ليلهم سهدا

    Nor Argives sleep while enemies appear."

  62. فقال لهيرا زفس في قبة العلى

    فلحت فآخيلٌ لقد أنف الصدا

  63. فلا ريب في أن الأغاريق قد نموا

    إليك وأضحى منك طارقهم تلدا

  64. فقالت ألا يا ظالماً قد هزأت بي

    وللإنس تلقى الإنس قد أحسنو العضدا

  65. ولم يبلغوا من راسخ العلم علمناص

    ولا مثلنا أوتوا بأرضهم الخلدا

  66. وإني وإن ما كنت أسمى إلاهةٍ

    وبعلي أخي من لا أقيس به ندا

  67. فلم أعط أن أولي الطراود ذلةً

    ولا قوم أرغوسٍ أنيل هنا رقدا
