1. ذاك الحديث في السماء يجري

    ونحو هيفستٍ ثتيس تجري

    That tale runs in the sky

    And towards a gentle Theseus it runs

  2. حيث بني الأعرج زاهي القصر

    صرحاً من النحاس عالي القدر

    Where the builder Ares, of the radiant palace

    Erected a towering citadel of brass

  3. في الخلد يسمو راسخاً للدهر

    ألفته سح عرقاً فوارا

    Rising loftily in eternity, firmly rooted forever

    He sweated profusely creating it

  4. يدير منفخاً ويذكي نارا

    مناضداً عشرين قد أدارا

    Operating the bellows and kindling a fire

    Twenty tables he had turned

  5. على الجدار تبهر الأبصارا

    مرفوعةً على عجال تبر

    Dazzling the eyes on the wall

    Raised on ivory pillars to the utmost wonder

  6. حتى بها بأعجب العجاب

    من نفسها لمجلس الأرباب

    By themselves for the council of masters

    Speeding back and forth hastily

  7. تسرع بالذهاب والإياب

    تمت سوى مقانبض الأجناب

    Perfect but for the clasps of the handles

    Along with their chains, finely wrought

  8. مع عراها الشائقات الغر

    أمامه قد حمي الوطيس

    Before him the anvil was heated

    Kept busy whenever Thetis approached

  9. يشغله إذا أقبلت ثيتس

    فأبصرتها عرسه خاريس

    She saw him, his wedding spoiled

    So she hastened to touch him gently

  10. فبادرت بفرعها تميس

    وصافحتها بعظيم البشر

    And greeted him with great delight

    O lady of the veiled mantle

  11. يا ربة المقنعة المسدوله

    ثيتيس يا خلتنا الجليله

    Thetis, our venerated aunt

    Why do you stay with us

  12. علام أنت عندنا نزيله

    على خلاف عادةٍ جميله

    Contrary to your pleasant custom?

    Come, let us take you where we host guests

  13. هيي بنا حيث الضيوف نقري

    وأجلستها طلقة الإيناس

    And she seated her comfortably on a throne

    A wondrous, precisely measured chair

  14. عرشاً بديعاً محكم القياس

    قتيره من اللجين القاسي

    Short of pure tin, of hardened

    Surface, with a footrest for sitting

  15. ذاموطئٍ لأرجل الجلاس

    وزوجها نادت بصوت الجهر

    And called her husband in a loud voice

    "Hephaestus, come! Thetis seeks your aid"

  16. هيفست قم ثيتيس عونك ابتغت

    فقال أهلاً بإلاهةٍ سمت

    He said “Welcome to a goddess so grand

    She who has relieved me of sorrow

  17. تلك التي الكربة عني فرجت

    لما من السماء بي أمي رمت

    When my mother threw me from the heavens

    They hid my deformity with kind condolences

  18. ثكتم عاهتي بشرّ الكبر

    فهي وافر ينومة الإحسان

    For she is generous, stamp of favor

    Daughter of the raging, dreadful ocean

  19. بنت المحيط الجازر الهتان

    بالبشر والأنس تلقتاني

    Who received me first, so I was not miserable

    And sheltered me in the abyss of the cavern

  20. أولا فما كان إذاً أشقاني

    ووارتاني في عباب القعر

    Nine years, secreted in the veil

    Except them two, none in earth or sky

  21. حللت كهفاً حوله قد دارا

    مجرى الخضم مزبداً هدارا

    Knew of my distant abode

    They, they eased my misery

  22. كم صغت فيه لهما سوارا

    خواتماً قلائداً أزرارا

    And now Thetis sits before me

    How can I pay the debt of gratitude?

  23. تسعة أعوامٍ بط الستر

    سواهما في الأرض والسماء

    Charis waited on her courteously

    So I may rest my bellows and prepare

  24. لا أحدٌ درى مقامي النائي

    هما هما قد خففا شقائي

    And the master left her, turning away

    Dragging his feet, the hot embers beside him

  25. والآن ثيتيس هنا إزائي

    إأنى أأدي حق فرض الشكر

    He placed his bellows in a silver urn

    Then headed to a sponge

  26. خاريس وافيها بواجب القرى

    حتى أريح منفخي وأحضرا

    Wiping his chest and tall forehead

    His hands too and sturdy neck

  27. وغادر العلاة عنها مدبراً

    تخمع ساقاه به فأخرا

    Then wore a gown and went on

    Leaning on a dazzling, solid golden scepter

  28. مفاخه عن حر واري الجمر

    وأودع المدة درج فضة

    In one hand a heavy hammer

    In the other, long tongs

  29. يعمد من ثم إلى إسفنجة

    يمسح صدره وعالي الجبهة

    He stood tall, fully engaged

    And started his craftsmanship

  30. كذا يديه ومتين الرقبة

    ثم اكتسى برداً وعاد يسري

    A great shield, of wondrous quality

    Its elegant rim above the rest

  31. بصولجانٍ شائقٍ صلبٍ ذهب

    معتمداً على وصيفتي ذهب

    Encircled by three layers

    On supports of refined tin

  32. أعطيتا صوتاً وعقلاً وأدب

    لخدمة الأرباب في كل أرب

    Gleaming over five discs of metal

    He engraved it with a design to marvel

  33. كغادتين ازدانتا بالفكر

    وليتا هيفست من حيث انثنى

    At its beauty of sights and ideas

    For the land and sky and seas

  34. حتى إلى ثيتيس بالجهد دنا

    حل على عرشٍ بهي معلنا

    Appeared upon it in their glory

    The radiant sun and the full moon

  35. ترحابه لها ومن ثم انحنى

    مصافحاً لها بقول الحر

    And he formed on it the multitude of stars

    Like a pendant of clustered jewels

  36. يا ربة المقنعة المسدوله

    ثيتيس يا خلتنا الجليله

    The Pleiades, Orion, and the Giant

    A bear, called the Wain, revolving

  37. علام أنت عندنا نزيله

    على خلاف عادةٍ جميله

    Through which the ocean cannot be sated

    And two cities crowded with people, one of them

  38. مري فإنني رهين الأمر

    قالت تسيل الدمع هل مث

    With mortals and demigods

    Where the brides and grooms wed

  39. لي ترى شقية ما بين ربات الورى

    دون بنات الماء زفس قدرا

    Amid singing, torchlights

    And dancing youths frolic and rejoice

  40. علي أن أصيب بعلاً بشرا

    فيلا وأمضى أمره بالقسر

    To the tune of lutes and drums

    Resounding, and women at the gates

  41. فيلا لقد أقعده فرط الكبر

    عجزاً وزفس كادني كيداً أمر

    Standing, captivated by the procession

    And others of the crowd erect

  42. أعطيت نجلاً فاق أبطال البشر

    أنشأته كالغصن في روضٍ أغر

    There, two men prolong a dispute

    Over blood-money for a slain man

  43. فثارت الحرب على ما تدري

    أنفذته في الفلك للطعان

    One claims to pay it in full

    The other denies utterly

  44. آه فلن يعود للأوطان

    قصر عن إمداده بناني

    And demands judgment from the arbiter

    Both seek the ruling of the judge

  45. حيا ولكن ثائر الأشجان

    يرى سنا الشمس قصير العمر

    While the angry and contentious people

    Clamor, to which is right

  46. حبته غادةً بنو الآخاء

    جزاء حسن الذود والإبلاء

    In their quarrel, and soldiers lined up

    Command silence, to settle the case

  47. فرامها أتريذ بالدهاء

    أقعده الكيد عن الهيجاء

    There, elders of the guard

    On stone benches sitting solemn

  48. فشهر الطرواد سيف النصر

    ودفعوا الإغريق للأسطول

    Stood, for all the nations to see

    Their weapons by their sides pronouncing judgment

  49. فهبت الصيد إلى أخيل

    تطمعه بنائلٍ جزيل

    One by one, rendering their verdicts

    Before those columns, solemnly

  50. أبى قبول تحفة القيول

    لكن دعا فطرقل للمكر

    Golden scepters between them

    For the one who rules justly, to fend off blame

  51. ألبسه شكته سلاحا

    فهب في أصحابه وراحا

    The other city Hephaestus sketched

    Two armies around it attacked

  52. فكافحوا عداهم كفاحاً

    لسور إليونهم اكتساحا

    One band resolved to raze it

    The other half the money seeks as spoils

  53. فأوشكت تعنو لهم بالقهر

    لكنما فيبوس فطرقل قتل

    Its people fortified themselves behind walls

    A hidden ambush they prepared

  54. لما رآه مزق الجيش وفل

    وخول النصر لهكطور البطل

    And atop their ramparts stood

    The elders, women and children

  55. لذاك بادرت إليك بالعجل

    أبسط فوق ركبتيك عذري

    Before them, the lord of valiant deeds

    Like shelter for the distressed

  56. أحسن إذاً لولدي الحبيب

    من سيلاقي الموت عن قريب

    Both sculpted fully of gleaming

    Gold in body, clothes and arms

  57. بخوذةٍ ومجوبٍ عجيب

    ولأمةٍ مع حذاً قشيب

    You would think them alive

    Supremely wrought by the artist's hands

  58. تحرز ثنائي وجميل الأجر

    قال اطمئني آه لو يوم القدر

    As if stamped by immortals, above all flaws

    They reached the ford of a flowing river

  59. يتاح أن أقيه أهوال الخطر

    كما يتاح الآن في هذا المقر

    Where the flock drinks and cavorts

    There they stood with spear and bow

  60. إعداد عدةٍ له أيٌّ نظر

    إلى سناها بسواها يزري

    Lying in wait for the herders' approach

    So two cowherds came forward

  61. ثم مضى يدير نحو الكور

    منافخاً دارت بلا مدير

    Playing the flute, heedless

    Of the ambush, carefree

  62. فأججت بمثل لمح النور

    عشرين موقداً لظى السعير

    Who leapt out and killed the lads

    And slaughtered the cattle, the worst massacre

  63. تفرغ ما يحتاجه بالقدر

    تهب طوراً هبة الأنواء

    Their cries rose loud

    Reaching the enemy hosts

  64. وتارةً تنفخ بالإبطاء

    ثم رمى بالعسجد الوضاء

    Who rushed in a fierce onslaught

    And grappled, exchanging lethal blows

  65. للنار فوق الفضة الغراء

    فوق فلزه وصلدٍ الصفر

    A downpour of blades over the walls

    Between them chaos and din

  66. وإذا دحى سندانه المهيلا

    ففي يدٍ مطرقه الثقيلا

    As well as the deadly fate

    Looming over the old man

  67. وفي يدٍ ملقاطه الطويلا

    أعلى وقام شاغلاً مشغولا

    Blood dripping from his cloak

    Some flee him, others take flight

  68. يشرع في المجن بدء الأمر

    ترسٌ عظيمٌ شائق الأوصاف

    Another grasps men by the feet

    Dragging corpses from the fray

  69. وطوقه البهي فوق الحاف

    يكنفه مثلث الأطراف

    You see those figures on the shield

    Seem to move, vividly drawn

  70. على حمائل اللجين الصافي

    يزهو على خمس طباق الظهر

    Dragging away their dead, scattered about

    Below this scene, a fertile field

  71. أودعه نقشاً به تحار

    لحسنه الأنظار والأفكار

    Three plowmen worked in fact

    Upturning the sod in straight furrows

  72. فالأرض والسماء والبحار

    منهن لاحت فوقه الآثار

    Sipping the sweet wine

    As a boy brings them a cup, next to their plow

  73. وساطع الشمس وتم البدر

    وصاغ فيه جملة الدراري

    They turn, leaving the plow erect

    At each end, full of fortitude

  74. مثل الثريا الجمة الأنوار

    والدبران ولقا الجبار

    There, the landowner between them

    Silent, watching their diligence

  75. دبٍّ دعوا مركبةً دوّار

    من دونها لا يرتوي بالبحر

    Leaning on his staff, smiling

    Seeing the blessing of abundance

  76. وبلدتين غصتا بالناس إحداهما

    بالبشر والإيناس

    Under an oak tree, grapes are prepared

    They slaughtered an ox, all busied themselves

  77. زف بها الزوجان بالأعراس

    بين غناءٍ وسنا مقباس

    The women assisted their work

    Cutting the fine meat

  78. ورقص فتيةٍ لهت وصفر

    ونغمة الرباب والشباب

    Distributing it on mats

    Likewise a vine of forged branches

  79. تصدح والنساء في الأعتاب

    وقفن للزفة بالإعجاب

    Laden, stooping with the weight of grapes

    Its poles silver that did not tarnish

  80. وغير هذا الحشد بانتصاب

    هنالك اثنان استطالا جدلا

    Framed by a ditch and dry moat

    Accessible only by one path

  81. لديةٍ حق قتيلٍ قتل

    هذا ادعى إيفاءها مكملا

    Which the vintagers cross in season

    And returning, the maidens' ambitions

  82. يعلن ذاك الأمر ما بين الملا

    وذاك منكرٌ أشد النكر

    Pick and place each harvest

    In their baskets, the ripe clusters

  83. كلاهما يطلب حكم القاضي

    والناس بين ساخطٍ وراض

    Crimson between them, a maiden dancing

    With lyre playing soft tunes

  84. ضجوا لأيٍّ ساعة التقاضي

    أحسن والفيوج باعتراض

    And they sing the song of Linos

    Lilting melodies, keeping time

  85. تأمر بالصمت لحسم الأمر

    هنالك الشيوخ من ضمن حرم

    Beating the ground, moved by the rhythm

    Below this, a herd of cattle

  86. على مقاعدٍ من الصخر الأصم

    قاموا بأيديهم على مرأى الأمم

    Molten metal, some tawny

    Surging, bellowing towards the hills

  87. صوالج الفيوج يبدون الحكم

    فرداً ففرداً أدوا الأحكاما

    Near a river, amid green reeds

    Four herders of tin watch over them

  88. أمام هاتيك السرى قياما

    وشافلان ذهباً تماماً

    And nine dogs assist their guarding

    Two lions, terrifying to behold

  89. بينهم قد أودعت إكراما

    لمن محا بالعدل شر الوزر

    Pounced, slaughtering a bull they coveted

    Tearing it apart, gorging, draining its blood

  90. والبلدة الأخرى هفست رسما

    جيشين حولها عليها هجما

    The herders behind them enraged

    Their hounds bristled at the violence

  91. جيشٌ لقد آلى بأن تهدما

    وذاك نصف المال يبغي مغنما

    Fled in fear, panicked by their fury

    Further below, well-built sheepfolds

  92. وأهلها تحصنوا بالسر

    كمينهم بينهم أعدوا

    Near shelters pleasing to the eye

    Among cottages, by a blossoming meadow

  93. وفوق سورهم أقام الولد

    والأهل والشيوخ ثم امتدوا

    And copses atop the verdant glade

    Nearby, a scene of alluring dance

  94. أمامهم رب الكفاح الصلد

    كذا أثنيا ملجأ المضطر

    As if carved with wondrous skill

    Youths and maidens on the soft meadow

  95. كلاهما من ذهبٍ وضاح

    بالجسم والملبس والسلاح

    Dancing, as Ariadne relived sweet memories

    Clad in olive oil gleaming attire

  96. تراهما العين على البراح

    أعظم قد من سرى الكفاح

    The maidens' beauty itself spoke

    Their jewelry, swords of fired clay

  97. ما مس آل الخلد شين الصغر

    فبلغوا جدة نهر جاري

    Drawn from the mint of Hephaestus

    But their crown was a garland of flowers

  98. مورد غر الشاء والثيار

    فوقفوا بالرمح والبتار

    Joining palm to palm and thumb

    They danced with rhythm and skill

  99. وأرصدوا عينين للصوار

    ليرقبا عند ورود النهر

    As if their feet were potter's wheels

    Thrown by the master craftsman

  100. فأقبلت أمام راعيين

    بنغمة المزمار لاهيين

    Drawing line after line in succession

    Around them a crowd, and among them

  101. عن ذلك الكمين غافلين

    فوثبوا وقتلوا الغرين

    A singer with mellifluous voice

    As the strings were plucked, two youths

  102. ونحروا السوام شر النحر

    فارتفعت عجاعج الضواضاء

    Began their dance, repeating his song

    And when those marvels were done

  103. فبلغت مسامع الأعداء

    فأقبلوا بغارةٍ شعواء

    The Ocean's streams he placed on the rim

    The shield then completed, he forged

  104. واشتبكوا وانهال باللقاء

    غيثٌ من النصال فوق الثغر

    Armor as radiant as the sun's brilliance

    Fit only for that warrior's chest

  105. بينهم فتنة والغوغاء

    كذا مبيد الأمم القضاء

    And a helmet with a graceful crest

    Of heavy tin and burnished

  106. يعلو على كهله رداء

    تسيل من أطرافه الدماء

    Bronze, for that glorious hero

    And greaves of supple, polished

  107. يفر عن هذا وذاك يفري

    وآخرا أمسك بالأقدام

    Brass he hammered fully

    When all those treasures were finished

  108. يزيح عن مواقف الصدام

    تلك رسوم بذكا الرسام

    He cast them before the mother of Achilles

    An artisan's gift for the mortals

  109. ترى على المجن كالأجسام

    تسحب موتاها وبرياً تبري

    And she darted from the shining Olympus

    Bore them swiftly as a diving hawk

  110. ودون هذا الرسم رسم حقل

    خصبٍ ثلاثاً حرثوا بالفعل

  111. رجاله قامت بعبء الشغل

    قد عمقوا الثلم بسطرٍ عدل

  112. يرتشفون من لذيذ الخمر

    في منتهى الأرض انبرى غلام

  113. إذا انقضى ثلمهم التمام

    ناولهم كاساً وهم قيام

  114. فانقلبوا ونيرهم أقاموا

    بكل وجهةٍ بملء الصبر

  115. والأرض سوداء تلوح للنظر

    وإن تكن من ذهبٍ تلك الصور

  116. كأنما الفلاح في الحال عبر

    نعم فذي معجزةٌ ممن قدر

  117. أن يخضع العسر لأمر اليسر

    وقربه يانع زرعٍ بادي

  118. دارت به مناجل الحصاد

    ومن وراها زمرة الأولاد

  119. تجمع ما يلقى على التمادي

    وخلفهم ثلاثةٌ تستقري

  120. تضم ما ألقوا لهم ضمن حزم

    وثم رب الأرض ما بين الحشم

  121. قد قام صامتاً يرى تلك الهمم

    معتمداً على عصاه فابتسم

  122. ينظر بالبشر لوفر الذخر

    وتحت سنديانةٍ قام الندل

  123. يهيئون الزاد في ذاك المحل

    قد ذبحوا ثوراً به الكل اشتغل

  124. وعاونتهم النساء في العمل

    على لحومه الدقيق تذري

  125. كذاك كرمٌ بدوالي ذهب

    قامت فمالت تحت ثقل العنب

  126. سمكه من فضةٍ لم تشب

    قد سطرت دون وشيعٍ أشهب

  127. يكنفها وخندقٍ مغبر

    ليس له إلا طريقٌ رسما

  128. يعبره الكرام أيام النما

    وللرد تبدي والعذاري الهمما

  129. تجني وفي السلال تلقي كل ما

    جنته من قطفٍ ذكا محمر

  130. بينهم فتىً بعودٍ قاما

    مردِّداً بنقره الأنغاما

  131. نشيد لينوس الذي تسامى

    فرددوا النشيد والأقداما

  132. في الأرض دقوا وفق ذاك النقر

    ودون ذا سربٌ من الثيار

  133. من الفلز ومن النضار

    مندفقٌ يزأر للبراري

  134. يرى لدى نهرٍ على مجار

    محاطةٍ بالقصب المخضر

  135. رعاته أربعةٌ من عسجد

    وتسعةٌ كلابه للرصد

  136. وثم ليثان مروعا المشهد

    قد فرسا ثوراً فكرت تغتدي

  137. رعاته وغضفه في الإثر

    قد مزقاه مغنماً بينهما

  138. وازدردا الأحشاء وامتصا الدما

    فأوغر الرعاة من خلفهما

  139. كلابهم فهالها بطشهما

    هرت وهدت شديد الذعر

  140. ودون ذا في مرجةٍ خضراء

    صرائفٌ محكمة البناء

  141. لدى حضائرٍ تسر الراءي

    بين مرابع لغر الشاء

  142. كذا غياض فوق روض نضر

    وقرب هذا رسم مغنى طرب

  143. كأنه نادس بديع العجب

    ألف في أكنوس ذيذال الأبي

  144. لحظ أريانا بماضي الحقب

    من فتيةٍ من عذاري زهر

  145. رداهم المنسوج كالزيت برق

    وبرقع الحسان بالحسن نطق

  146. وحليهم سيفٌ من التبر انطلق

    على نجاد فضة هيفست دق

  147. لكن حليهن تاج زهر

    تعاضدوا بالكف والإبهام

  148. فرقصوا بالعلم والإلمام

    كأنهم بحقه الأقدام

  149. محال خزافٍ رماه الزامي

    ثم جروا سطرٌ وراء سطر

  150. حولهم حشدٌ وفي وسطهم

    قام مغنٍّ بشجي النغم

  151. إن نقر العود فمن بينهم

    قرمان دارا بحفيف القدم

  152. رقصاً يرددان لحن الشعر

    وعندما أتم هاتيك البدع

  153. مجاري المحيط في الحاف وضع

    فأكمل المجن من ثم ابتدع

  154. درعاً سناها كسنا الشمس سطع

    ما صلحت إلا لذاك الصدر

  155. وخوذةً بقونسٍ جميل

    من عسجدٍ ومحملٍ ثقيل

  156. لاقت لذاك البطل الجليل

    ومن نحاسٍ لينٍ مصقول

  157. طرق خفين تمام البر

    وإذ أتم كل تلك الغرر

  158. ألقى بها لأم آخيل السري

    من لدنٍ ربٍّ تحفةً للبشر

  159. فانحدرت من الألمب الأزهر

    واندفعت بها اندفاع الصقر
