1. كَذا أغرَاهُ بالوَعدِ احتِيَالا

    وغادَرَهُ يرَى ما لَن يَنالا

    Thus he enticed him with the promise of guile

    And abandoned him to see what he’d never attain

  2. فَلاحَ لهُ وَما أغوَاهُ يعلو

    بذاكَ اليَومِ إِليُونَ احتِلالا

    So he had no luck even with what had misled him

    On that day to take Ilioun by storm

  3. ولم يَعلَم نَوايا الرَّبِّ لَمَّا

    عَلَيهِ قَدَّرَ الحَربِ السِّجَالا

    And he did not know the Lord's intentions when

    He had ordained for all the tribes that war of clashing

  4. أَعدَّ لِجُملَةِ القَومَينِ بُؤساً

    وأَرزَاءً إِذا اشتَبَكُوا اقتِتالا

    That would bring misery for the masses of both sides

    And calamities when they engaged in deadly combat

  5. أَفاقَ وَصَوتُ رَبِّ الطَّيفِ يَدوِي

    حَوَالَيهِ فَهَبَّ وَقَامَ حَالا

    He awoke and the voice of the Lord of apparitions roared

    Around him so he sprang up swiftly

  6. تدَثَّرَ فِى شَعارٍ ذِي بهَاءٍ

    وَأردَفَ حُلَّةً تَزهُو جَمالا

    He donned a splendid, radiant cloak

    And a robe that shone with beauty

  7. وَأَوثَقَ خِفَّه الزَّاهي وأَلقَى

    على كَتِفَيهِ سَيفاً قد تَلالا

    He tied his bright sword and slung

    A blade across his shoulders that glittered

  8. وأمسَكَ صَولَجاناً خَالِدِياً

    لأَهلِيهِ وَنحوَ الفُلكِ مالا

    He grasped his everlasting spear

    And headed for his ship

  9. وأَمَّت رَبَّةُ الفَجرِ المَعالي

    لِزَفسٍ وَالمَيامِينِ امتِثالا

    And the mistress of dawn, lofty in her glories

    Rose for Zephyros and the rosy-fingered Morn

  10. تُبَشِّرُهُم بِطّرِ الصُّبحِ لمَّا

    اَغامَمنُونُ بَينَ القَومِ جالا

    Heralding to them the Beauty of the dawn when

    Nemonoan moved among the horde

  11. وَنادى في الدُّعاةِ بأَن يَصيحُوا

    بأَعلى الصَّوتِ للشُّورى ارتِحالا

    And called out among the heralds to cry

    In the loudest voice for the council to depart

  12. فَلَبَّوهُ وأَقبَلَتِ السَّرَايا ال

    شُّكَاةُ إِلَيهِ تَنتَضِلُ انتِضالا

    And they hastened to obey him, and the troops came

    Thronging to him, gathering round

  13. وَقَد عَقَدَ الشُّيُوخُ قُبَيلَ هذا

    بجانبِ فُلكِ نَسطُورَ احتِفالا

    The elders had met shortly before this

    Beside Nestor's ship, celebrating

  14. بِهِم أَترِيذُ نادَى مُستَشِيراً

    لما زَعمَوا مِنَ الأَمرِ احتِمالا

    And among them, the pupil called out asking

    What they claimed of the situation to endure
