O mistress of the sand dune who sang
And plucked the strings of the oud, so stop!
As for you, O spots on my eyes, you have come
Close to me like the henna on fingers
What business has a strummer in the sand dune
Strumming as she does before me on the gray dome?
What good is it for me to have spots
On a fawn with a necklace and bracelets?
No branch was sweet for me but yours,
And my eyes delighted in none but your breasts.
I desired no princess but one
In a necklace of pearls from your mouth, little moon.
It's she who lay, O my soul, confusing me,
brought by my imagination which my skill chose.
I never thought that phantom would serve me
willingly with what is ordained for the mighty.
Until I obtained a virgin without her strumming ‒
the striking of tattoos and loss of hearing and sight.
