وما اسم رباعي تميل نفوسنا

إليه وتصبو دائماً وهو مهملُ

A pleasing four letter word that touches our souls

We yearn for it, desire it, yet it’s neglected

له مبدأ سهل إذا الشمس أشرقت

وكان بها نقص تتم وتكمل

It has an easy beginning when the sun rises

Though incomplete, with it we become whole

إذا طرَّفوه بالذي مثل سدسه

تبين منه للفريقين مرسل

When prefixed by a sixth part, it clarifies

Sending the message clearly to both parties

وإن فارق التطريف وانجاب سدسه

فحسبك منه آية تترتل

Without the prefix, minus a sixth that remains

Is enough, a sign to chant and extol

وقوت يقات المرء منه وربما

يصير له الإنسان قوتاً فيؤكل

It can empower and feed a person, and maybe

Become his very sustenance, consumed in full

تليه حروفٌ عكسها مثل طردها

وليس لها معنى يعد ويجمل

After it, inverted letters copying its form

Meaningless to count, compose or extoll

إذا مس إحدى جانبيها بكوكب

غدت قول ميَّانٍ عن الحق يعدل

If a planet touches either side minimally

It becomes a deviant statement from the truth

وإن طرّفت بالواو والنجم غائبٌ

غدت طائراً في الشام يعلو ويسفل

Prefix it with the vav and the absent star

It becomes a bird in Damascus flying high and low

وثاني حروف اللغز حرفٌ هجاؤه

عرِّيٌ من الإعجام يحواه مرجل

The second letter of the riddle, its pronunciation

Is bare, unadorned, contained in a brazier

له همُّ محزونٍ إذا ما طردته

يزول ولكن دانقٌ منه يفضل

It carries the sorrow of a grieving soul

Which fades with its order but remnants prevail

يرى الرجل الشيعي في البدر شكله

فيهتف هذا للرسالة أول

The Shia man sees its shape formed in the full moon

So he calls out, this is the first messenger

فدونك هذا النصف إن نواله

يسرك أو فيما يسرك يدخل

Or however much makes you happy, take your fill

Be stingy with it, for even the generous

وضن به إن السخي بمثله

يعاب ولم يثلب به حين يبخل

Are chastised if they don’t conserve when thrift is wisdom

Moreover know half its half, the latter part

على أن هذا النصف مع نصف نصفه ال

أخير كثيرٌ في الرياض مبهدل

Is overused in math, severely discounted

It learned from foreign languages to hyphenate

تعلَّمَ من غيد الأعاجم أنه

يُقلنسُ إلّا أنه لا يسرول

Except it does not glide smoothly in speech

After this half and a fourth comes a single one

ومن بعد هذا النصف والربع واحدٌ

يتم به والهم والغم يرحل

Completing it, banishing worries until

If absent where the grape seed lies,

إذا غاب منه الثمن في حيز النوى

بقي عندنا باقيه ذلك مشكل

What remains is problematic, still unsolved

Oh beautiful name that comforts hearts

فيا حسنه اسماً يمنح القلب راحةً

ولكنه إن جاوز الحدَّ يقتلُ

But if exceeded destroys and kills

When found now it brings neither good nor evil, useless

ولا خير فيه حين تلقاه حالياً

ولا شر فيه وهو باقٍ معطل

Will a noble free soul unveil the mask

And gain the thanks of the grateful with merit

فهل فاضلٌ حرٌّ يزيل لثامه

ويغنم شكر الشاكرين ويفضل
