O Lord, my patience has worn thin
In spring, the roses vanish from my sight
What is it, O Lord, that distracts me from the roses?
The basil of night or the jasmine of dawn
You created him, my God, eloquent and beautiful
From the essence of humanity, not from the essence of trees
So how, O Merciful, can Your servant be consoled
Or how can I refrain from weeping for him in the rain
I wondered when the roses deserted their dwellings
And surrendered their radiant light to the graves
And I said the morning sun rests on high
Why has it dimmed like a tower of stone?
Then an angel called out to me saying
When the eyes of men fell asleep
Lower your gaze, for no rose equals
Save with God, its protector from harm
In a garden of the Gardens of Eternity it resides
He who lived in obedience to the Creator cautiously
If he did not gently dab his tears
The universe would be in danger
