1. سفرت فأشرق غربها والمشرقُ

    بيضاء من فلك الغلالة تشرقُ

    Her departure brought light to its west, and the east

    Shone white from the sphere of darkness shining

  2. في فرقها فلقٌ وفي وجناتها

    شفقٌ وفي فيها نجومٌ تبرق

    In her separation is a crack, and in her cheeks

    A glow, and in it stars that sparkle

  3. وكأن بلبل خالها في خدها

    لصٌّ يعذب أو عبيرٌ يحرق

    As if a nightingale left its mark on her cheek

    A thief who tortures or a fragrance that burns

  4. أخذت عن الريم النفار فكلما

    قلت ارفقي قالت أريمٌ يرفق

    She took from the sand grouse its alertness so whenever

    I say, "Be gentle," she says, "I am gentle."

  5. صدقت خلاخلها التي قالت لنا

    لا يرحم العشاق من لا يعشق

    True are her anklets that told us

    Lovers have no mercy for those who do not love

  6. أفكل مشتاقٍ لصدرٍ واسعٍ

    يدنيه من مولاه حجلٌ ضيق

    A long sigh from every longing heart

    That a narrow pass brings closer to its Master

  7. ويلاه من عربيةٍ لا تعرف ال

    إحسان والعربيُّ من يتصدق

    Woe to an Arab woman who does not know

    Generosity while the Arab is one who gives

  8. أجرى المدامع حبها وكوى الحشى

    فأنا الغريق بحبها والمُحرَق

    The wine of her love flows as tears and sears my breast

    So I am her drowned lover and burnt

  9. وأنا عذير العاشقين على البكا

    فالحسن تبرٌ والمدامع زئبق

    And I am the excuse of lovers for crying

    For beauty is innocence and tears are mercury

  10. واللَه ما لعب الدلال بعطفها

    وبدى لظى وجناتها تتألق

    By God, the coquetry of her charm

    And the brightness of her cheeks flashing

  11. إلّا ليلعب بالعقول غرامها

    ولكل قلبٍ بالصبابة يحرق

    Is only to toy with minds, her love

    And set each heart aflame with youth

  12. يا ربة الحسن التي تبري حوا

    جبُها لنا أُكَرَ النبال وترشق

    O you with beauty that exonerates

    Her forehead for us, best of archers and shooter

  13. قولي لجيدك لا يدل بطوقه

    عبد الأمير متوَّجٌ ومطوق

    Tell your neck not to show off its collar

    The Prince's slave is crowned and collared.

  14. وبحب عبد القادر ابن الشهم مح

    يي الدين تبيَّض الوجوه وتشرق

    And with the love of Abdul Qadir ibn Shahin Mah

    yiddin the faces whitened and shone

  15. ملك بِمَرْكَعِهِ الملائك تحدقُ

    وبغيره مقل الملوك تحدِّق

    A king at whose nod the angels stare

    While without him the kings stare vacantly

  16. أخذت على الناس العهود بحبه

    فإن استخفوا بالعهود تزندقوا

    I took from the people the pledges of loving him

    So if they took the pledges lightly, they would be faithless

  17. من مثل مولانا الأمير ودونه

    فلك الأثير وما هناك مُحَلّق

    The highest heaven and whatever soars

    Is not like our Prince and cannot match

  18. من مثله وبه الفقير يرى الغنى

    ويجوز من نار السعير ويعتق

    The likes of him bring wealth to the poor

    And deliver from the hellish fire

  19. مدح الأمير على البرية واجبٌ

    فبمدحه كل امرءٍ يتوفق

    Praising the Prince openly is a duty

    So through his praise everyone succeeds

  20. هذا ابن محيي الدين لا دينٌ لمن

    والى سواه ولا حياءٌ يرمق

    This is the son of the Reviver of the Faith - no faith

    To anyone but him, no shyness or respect remains

  21. هذا وريث الأنبياء فكل ما

    يرضى الإله عليه وقف مطلق

    This is the heir of the prophets, so everything

    That pleases God is devoted to him absolutely

  22. هذا الإمام العابد الحرّ الذكي

    ي الزاهد البر الرؤوف المشفق

    This is the worshipping, free, wise, ascetic

    Pious, kindhearted, careful Imam

  23. الفاضل المتجرد الورع الولي

    ي الماجد السمح الفصيح المفلق

    The accomplished mystic, devout saint

    Glorious, generous, eloquent, elucidating

  24. من لم يقم للَه مثل قيامه

    بين الأعنة والأسنة فيلق

    Whoever does not stand for God like his standing

    Amid adversities and hostilities, may he perish!

  25. من لم يصم كصيامه ابن طريقة

    صوماً تجف به الجنوب وتلصق

    Whoever does not fast like his fast the son of spiritual path

    A fast that dries out the waist and makes it stick

  26. فشرابه قبل الغزالة نغبةٌ

    وطعامه أيّان تغرب جردق

    His drink before the gazelles is a sip

    And his food: when bats take wing

  27. من لا يزال على رحالة سابحٍ

    قلق العنان غباره لا يلحق

    Whoever does not cease wandering like him

    With slackened reins, his dust cannot be caught

  28. صافي الأديم يقل نوراً صافياً

    من بضعة الهادي يشف ويشرق

    The sheen of his skin dimming the bright sheen

    From the Prophet's footprint - it heals and shines

  29. في كفه صافي الحديدة مخذمٌ

    بدم النحور الجانيات مخلَّق

    In his palm Indian steel is a handful

    With the blood of victims, beasts marked

  30. يدعو لدين اللَه دعوة صادق

    عن طاعة الرحمن لا يتعوَّق

    He calls to God's religion with true calling

    Never wavering in obedience to the Merciful

  31. أو في المساجد قائماً لصَلاته

    وصِلاته متنفِّلاً يتصدق

    Or in mosques standing for his prayers

    And voluntary prayers for which he gives alms

  32. يا خير من شهد اَنَّ أحمد مرسلٌ

    واللَه ربٌّ والكتاب مصدق

    O best of those who testified Ahmad is the Emissary

    And God is the Lord and the Book is the Truth

  33. لولاك كان العيد أصبح مأتماً

    وذوى به حظي وزال الرونق

    Were it not for you, celebrations would have mourned

    My joy would have waned and lost all charm

  34. وغدوت لا زند القريحة قادحٌ

    عندي ولا روض الفصاحة مورق

    The talent in me would not have sparked

    Nor would the garden of rhetoric have blossomed

  35. لا تعتبن على مصابيح الحجى

    إن غيبت فلها اعتذارٌ مشرق

    Do not blame the lights of wisdom

    If absent, for they have a brilliant excuse

  36. كسرت حكومتنا القلوب فلم تدع

    قولاً يروق ولا قريضاً يعشق

    Our rule has broken hearts, leaving

    No words that please, no odes that one may love,

  37. والشعر زيت والقلوب زجاجة

    فإذا تكسرت الزجاجة يهرق

    Poetry is oil and hearts are glass

    So if the glass breaks, the oil will pour

  38. أبحكم مجد الدين تشرق حكمة

    والظلم يمٌّ للفطانة مغرق

    I give you the glory of faith though injustice

    Inclines to drown the perceptive

  39. لم أدر كيف يريد قطع معاشنا

    هذا الخبيث وأنت حيٌّ ترزق

    I know not how this wretch wants to cut off our livelihood

    While you, who sustains us, live

  40. أو كيف أصبح حاكماً في جلق

    وبه كجوف العير صارت جلق

    Or how he came to rule in squalor

    When around him, like a water-skin, is squalor

  41. ليت الذي سماه مجد الدين سم

    مَمَه أمجد الدين فظٌّ أحمق

    Would that you who named him Glory of the Faith, named

    Him Ignoble Faithless Fool

  42. بال الحمار وراث بين لثاثه

    فإذا تعرَّض للتكلم ينهق

    A donkey's mind ruling donkeys

    If he speaks, he brays

  43. وكأنما بوم الخراب بحلقه

    أبداً يهدد بالخراب وينعق

    As if misfortune crowing in his throat

    Forever threatening ruin and braying

  44. ويوظّف اللصَّ العنيف لمالهِ

    ويلجُّ في عزل العفيف ويعنق

    Appointing the vicious thief for his money

    And dismissing the decent while strangling

  45. فأدام مولانا الإله فإننا

    بدعائه من كل داءٍ نُعتَق

    So may our Prince make it last, for by

    His prayer we are saved from every harm

  46. يا أرفق الثقلين بالعبد الذي

    يشكو لك الزمن الذي لا يرفق

    O Gentlest of the two burdens (man and jinn) to the servant complaining

    Of time that knows no gentleness

  47. كن مسعدي ما لي سواك مساعدٌ

    يمحو الكروب عن القلوب ويمحق

    Be my helper, for I have none but you helping

    Erasing sorrows from hearts and crushing them

  48. قد أدرك السيل الزبى ونبت ظُبى

    همّي وأدركني البلاء المطبق

    The torrent reached the flowers and the flowers bloomed

    My concerns and afflictions envelop me

  49. من فاجرٍ خان الأمير بوعده

    وابن الخيانة لا يقول ويصدق

    From a libertine who betrayed the Prince's promise

    And the traitors' son neither promises nor proves true

  50. وعزيزِ جاهك والعجاج عرمرمٌ

    تطفو به قلل الرؤوس وتغرق

    By the might of your station and the bald poets

    Swimming atop the hilltops and sinking

  51. لأمزقنَّ قلوب أولاد الزنا

    بمهندٍ منه البرية تَفرَق

    I will tear out the hearts of the bastards' sons

    With a sword that makes the wilderness quake

  52. سيف فصيح ناطق متمهِّرٌ

    فيما يصوره وفيما يخلق

    An eloquent talking sword, skilled

    In what it depicts and creates

  53. فإذا رأيت الشعر ليس بنافعي

    والمال يصرف لاعجي ويبدرق

    And if I see poetry brings no benefit

    And money spent yields nothing and is wasted

  54. زرت ابن شمعايا وقلت لدرهمي

    كن فرزه فالفرز بعدك بيدق

    I visited Ibn Shammaya and told my dirham

    "Turn out well," for after you good turns await

  55. وخرجت عن فرسي التي حسدت ولم

    أترك بشاه الجاه فيلاً يدبق

    And I left behind my horse which I envied but did not

    Leave Prince Glory without a mare prancing about

  56. استغفر الرحمن مما قلته

    فمطامعي بسواك لا تتعلق

    I seek forgiveness from the Merciful for what I said

    For my hopes in anything but You are not pinned

  57. إن ضمني بيت يضم مبرطلاً

    لا ضمّني من أوج فضلك جوسق

    If you shelter me in a house that shelters an ounce

    Not shelter me from the highest of your grace a handful
