O rose, it is not the roses of gardens that I seek—
the roses of your cheek revive me after death.
Had a remedy for my aching heart been known anywhere,
I would not have said, “O my heart’s desire, heal me through union.”
How long will he torment me with fire, O my soul,
while the fire of your love sears me with longing?
O Lord, through her abandonment my body has become
more delicate than my verse about her—and than my faith.
