With your intercession, O succor of the desperate,
My joy returns and my harm departs,
And every wound in my heart is healed,
And every care leaves my conscience.
For your intercession with our Lord is mighty,
It raises from their graves those long dead.
And saves a soul from hellfire’s torment,
As the demons fight to claim it.
O gate of salvation, O Salsabil of life,
O veil of the chaste ladies,
O cause of deliverance from just retribution
That has seized the vigorous youth.
Take my wretched hand and raise me up,
And save me from the terrible danger.
Heal my sickness and restore my vigor
That I may rise happily from my bed.
And guide with your praise every sinner
Lost in misdeeds and evil.
Have mercy, O Virgin, on my sickness
That sapped my strength and erased my joy.
And drown me in a flood of my tears
And burn me in the fire of my sighs.
My doctor despaired of healing me
And the voice of despair called limiting.
When the doctor saw me bearing
The heat of winter in the thickets,
He said, “With God’s mercy alone
Can you be cured,” and by the Virgin
Whom the Lord created pure
To intercede for rich and poor.
From her blood He took a pure body
That deifies her forevermore.
O embodiment of purity, intercede for me!
Plead for me, O my joy!
For I am tortured on the thorns of death
In the thickets and buds.
Does my broken heart pain you, O Mother of my Lord,
You who mend the broken?
Will hell take me while you are my succor?
Will darkness envelop me while you are my light?
Save me and heal me, for I have fallen
In your sanctuary like prey.
Save me, save me, else show me
To whom I can complain of my affairs!
Would your affection be content to see me,
Lacking your equal, O ocean of oceans,
Be deficient? Blessed is He who by your light
Transcends all likening, dazzling every light!
And gave you intercession, O heaven
He chose for the Maker of beings!
Praising you, O Virgin, is an ordinance for me,
Like obeying God Almighty.
And thanking you no sky can encompass,
So how can poetry, so concise?
I will exert all my effort praising you,
That God may pardon my deficiencies
And forgive and overlook my sins
And set my affairs right in my ending.
God’s peace be upon you, O Mother of orphans,
And O refuge of the desperate!
