Winter has come—so bring
us the soothing wine.
And let a flame laugh out from it,
kindled in the cup’s depths.
Pearls float upon it,
mimicking the salamander’s young.
The radiant stars grow jealous of them,
and the luster of pearls blushes.
Yet the stars of your front teeth
are more delicate, more perfect still.
Sweeter than your wine’s heady fire
is the honeyed nectar of your mouth.
That is what—if even a cripple
inhaled its fragrance—would make him sprint.
May God never torment a lovesick lover
who fell for this mouth made to be kissed—
the maiden’s mouth, a garden
lovelier than pearls.
Whoever said, “O light of my eyes,
your cheeks are roses,” was a fool.
To my mind, he is like a butterfly—
no, even the butterfly is wiser.
I would shield this countenance
from anything that bears thorns and withers,
that comes when summer draws near
and departs whenever winter comes.
Nothing has come to your cheeks except
beauties beaming with joy.
Whoever does not believe my words—
O people, let him look for himself.
