Awake—for here is the sword, clanging upon heads,
and here the tongue of triumph rings aloud with victory.
These are al-Salt’s fortresses, demolished and become
dwellings left desolate, save for wild beasts.
The reformers’ champion advanced, upheld,
while the corruptors’ wolf retreated in terror.
So be loyal to the gallant minister and seize the chance to earn favor,
and fall down before God, prostrate and bowing.
Beware of turning away from allegiance to him,
lest what befell those who faltered befall you.
Consider, my friend, how justice made our highlands fruitful,
and how the drought departed and withdrew;
and how Darwish robed himself in triumph and girded himself
with the keen sword of God’s victory when he donned his armor.
God endowed Darwish with courage and generosity,
and gave him gifts never granted to one more splendid.
He bestowed Syria upon him, and he revived its dead lands
and made firm those pillars of hers that had been shaken.
If you wish to annihilate the valiant warriors, say: “He struck”;
and if you wish to revive the seekers of bounty, say: “He called.”
Deal with him: when he smiles upon a crisis, he uproots it;
and his largesse, if it smiles upon rock, makes it bear fruit.
Even the piercing stars fall short of his lofty attainments,
and pouring clouds fall short of his bountiful hands.
No mountain matches him in steadfastness, nor the rain
in generosity, nor the noonday sun in radiance.
You see him, when the wine cup circles, a nightingale;
but when fierce war rages, a valiant chief.
