O my night—you were our songstress,

    envied by every envied one.

Return to us—by God, return—so perhaps

my oud may green again in serenity’s garden,

with wine and sweet basil from the mistress of—

    —kindness, gracious deeds, and generosity:

    والطيب في شاماتها السود

    she whose mouth holds blossoms,

    and whose black beauty marks hold fragrance;

the cup like a diamond upon her palm,

and the wine like ruby amid the largesse.

By God, I shall never forget you, my paradise,

O desire of my heart and all I seek.

And you, like a sidelock, stream loose

over the cheeks of a graceful maiden.

At the oud of the young man Shākir, we are

more rapt than a turtledove upon a bough.

How could one not be rapt who hears the—

—oud, and sips the daughter of a cluster,

and hears the verse I composed:

“O night of the Night Journey for Maḥmūd!”

    الفضل للضارب بالعود

    Merit is not the oud’s, nor its strings’;

    merit is the oud-player’s.

Were a tobacco stick in his hand,

he would spare you any need for David’s pipe.
