1. ليلٌ تكشف عن سحرْ

    أم فاءَ غيمٌ عن قمرْ

    A night unveiling magic,

    or clouds uncovering a moon,

  2. أم ياسمين بنانها

    ألوى بريحان الشعر

    or jasmine with its sprouts,

    twisting the fragrance of poetry.

  3. يا رب ماسفرت لتص

    لح شعرها يوم السفر

    O Lord, she did not travel to correct

    her hair on the day of travel,

  4. حتى تستر ماس خد

    ديها بياقوت الخفر

    to cover what her cheek revealed

    with the ruby of veil.

  5. وجرت عليه من الحمي

    م فواقعٌ مثل الدرر

    And from shyness poured on it

    incidents like pearls.

  6. فتركنه كالجلنا

    ر إذا تسربل بالمطر

    So she left it like a brazier

    when cloaked with rain.

  7. وتركنني من جلِّ نا

    ري يا مهيمن في خطر

    And she left me, from fear of disgrace,

    O Protector, in danger.

  8. آليت بالحوَر الذي

    ملكت به مهجَ البشر

    I swore by the houri whom

    I possessed, the hearts of mankind,

  9. وبخوط قامتها الرقي

    ق وريق مبسمها الأغر

    and by her slender stature and

    the bud of her smile so charming,

  10. لولا الحياء وقلبها ال

    قاسي وخوفي من سقر

    Were it not for modesty, her cruel heart,

    and my fear of hell,

  11. ما كنت أقنع من محيّا

    ها المورَّد بالنظر

    I would not be satisfied with her affectionate looks,

    and I would turn away from her like smoke in the night.

    طيف المدفَّع بالسهر
