1. أصم ناعيك آذاني وأنساني

    ما حل قبلك بي يا خير إنسان

    My ears are deaf to your wailing, and my humanity is numb

    No one like you has ever graced me, O best of men

  2. أصمني ونفى نومي وأغرقني

    يا قان أهل الوفا بالمدمع القاني

    You deafened me, banished my sleep, and drowned me

    O you who brought tears to my eyes through your loyalty

  3. فما أنا اليوم يا ابن الأخت ذو رمق

    يحيى به بعض يوم عاجز عاني

    Today, O nephew, I have no vigor

    To revive even a little, helpless and distressed

  4. ولا بحامد عيشٍ يا خليل غدا

    أحلى وأطيب منه سمُّ ثعبان

    Nor, O friend, is the life I lead tomorrow

    Sweeter and finer than poison of snakes

  5. أودعت مدحك ديواني فأطربني

    لكنه بالمراثي اليوم أبكاني

    I have deposited your praise in my diary, so delight me

    Yet today it makes me weep with elegies

  6. إذا تذكرت أيامي التي سلفت

    في الشام ألفيتها أحلام وسنان

    When I recall my past days in Damascus

    I found them to be dreams and mirth

  7. أيام جودك سيلٌ غير منقطع

    عن العفاة وبحرٌ غير ضنّان

    Your days of generosity, an unending flood

    Upon the destitute, and a sea that is never stingy

  8. وأنت تحسن مسروراً كأنك من

    راجي نوالك ممطورٌ بإحسان

    You were happy as if you were

    A hopeful suitor, treating kindly

  9. ويل المنية ما أدهى عجائبها

    أحيت بموتك بعد الموت أحزاني

    Woe to death, how strange are its wonders

    With your death, it revived my sorrows after death

  10. ولم تدع لبني أيوب ليث شرى

    أجرى وأجرع من آساد خفان

    It left no lion of courage for the Ayyubids

    More generous and valiant than the lionesses

  11. لو أن إجماعنا في وصف سؤدده

    في الدين لم يختلف في الأمة اثنان

    If we were united in describing your zeal

    In religion, no two would differ in the nation

  12. لمن لمن بعدك الأفراس تلجم وال

    أشعار تنظم من قاصٍ ومن دان

    After you, who will tame the steeds and

    Compose poetry from storyteller and judge?

  13. ومن سواك يحلِّي السابحات ويه

    ديها ويمهر أشعاراً بعقيان

    And who but you will train the swimming girls and

    Guide them and skillfully compose poems in calligraphy?

  14. ويعتني بيتامى الشام في سنة

    لا الروض فيها ولا النادي بريّان

    Who will care for the orphans of Damascus in a year

    Where there is no meadow or garden verdant?

  15. لو يشترى يا خليلُ الدمعُ حين يُرى

    فوق الخدود كياقوتٍ ومرجان

    If tears seen above the cheeks could be bought

    It would enrich the widows like pearls and coral

  16. أغنى الأراملَ يوم الأربعاء به

    عن راحتيك وعن أنسٍ وعن جان

    It left me, woe is me, no time for enjoyment

    Only for misery and worries it let me remain

  17. لم يبقني للهنا يا ويلتي زمني

    لكنه للعنا والهمِّ أبقاني

    Were it not for your solace in your brother, the brave one,

    And in my sons, death would have overtaken me

  18. لو لم تكن بأخيك القرم تعزيتي

    وبالبنين لكان الموت فاجاني

    So may the son of your father live in ease and plenty

    As long as the new moons shine on the Kurds

  19. فليسلم ابن أبيك البر في سعةٍ

    لآله الغر ما كر الجديدان

    And may your cub Ibrahim and your eldest daughter

    And Michel remain supporters of Susa

  20. وليبق شبلك إبراهيم وابنتك ال

    كبرى وميشيل أعواناً لسوسان

    May God's mercy be upon you, O friend, for your

    Efforts in life never harmed anyone

  21. عليك رحمة ربي يا خليل فما

    أضرَّ سعيُك في الدنيا بإنسان
