O grave digger, do not hasten with my son
Look at him, perhaps his soul is still in his body
His beauty is still intact from head to toe
He is fully adorned, nothing less nor more
His cheek like a rose, his eyelids closed
Like a green narcissus, his limbs like hail
As if he is sleeping or drunk on wine
Among gardens, hearing the singing bird
His neck never bent, glory to his Creator
Except to show his beauty and grace
Alas, time plucked a moon from him while still a bud
While allowed the thorn tree to keep growing
Justice, kindness, grace, he possessed them all
In his new attire they carried him
To a shrine - if only it were my eyes
On that coffin - if only it were my liver
They hid him, all his beauty disappeared
From my sight, and sorrow seeped into my being
Oh my bewilderment, my torment, the absence of my beloved
My eyes that have strayed from that lion
He who disappeared from my eyes and left me
Like a whale in water or a fish in the sea
He who obeyed my every whim
Protecting me from the strokes of anxiety and misery
His death has collapsed the walls around me
And surrounded me with walls of anguish
After Abraham, what can I do, how can I go on
Oh my burning pain, my emaciation, my empty hands
A cleaving sword, a piercing essence, a sparkling planet
A shining star, a pillar of support
I did not know how love could ravage hearts
Before it ravaged mine, and made it bleed
I never envied a free man his son
But now I am envied for my son
Your soul would be ransomed, my son, if it was known
That Death accepts a ransom of pearls
By God, if Death would take me instead
I would say, "O ender of joys, take me by the hand"
Oh Fate, you left me no support
Cursed are the hands that snatched my pillar away
I never thought Death would rob me
Of the lord of my heart and days
Until I saw the belle of life wailing
Her tears flowing from her eyes' springs
And the mother scattering dust on her cheeks
Crying "Alas, my pillar!"
Do not bury my son in the grave, leave him be
Bury my eyes that beheld him, bury my son
By God, I never thought the strokes of death
Would spare me and take him the very next day
But God willed him to ascend to Heaven
And I remain in the house of humiliation and misery
His Creator quenched his thirst with the finest mercy
And honored him with the Everlasting Sight
He is the Bountiful, and Abraham never
Withheld his hands from giving to anyone
He is the Beautiful, who bestows beauty, and does not
Deprive the hopeful of His Eternal Satisfaction
